Afaaq Thaqafiyya – Cultural Blueprints

كالنّحـــاس والفضّـــة، فهـــي عُرضـــة للتـــآكل، فيمـــا قـــد تعانـــي الأحجـار والخـرز مـن تـآكل فـي السّــطح أو ضعـف فـي البنيـة مـــع مـــرور الزّمـــن أو التعـــرّض للضّـــوء والهـــواء. ولمواجهـــة هــذه التحدّيــات، نعتمــد علــى تقنيّــات حفــظ متخصّصــة إلــى أقصــى درجـــةٍ، تُراعــى فيهــا خصائــص كل مــادة علــى حـــدة. تبـــدأ العمليّـــة دائمـــا بخطـــوة أساســـيّةٍ: تثبيـــت حالـــة القطعـــة ومنـــع تفاقمهـــا، عبـــر تخزينهـــا فـــي بيئـــة مناســـبة مـــن حيـــث الرّطوبـــة والحـــرارة والإضـــاءة، مـــا يضمـــن إبطـــاء عوامـــل التّدهـــور. كمـــا يتـــم تصميـــم قواعـــد مخصّصـــة لـــكل قطعـــةٍ، ســـواء للعـــرض أو للتّخزيـــن، بهـــدف تقليـــل الضّغـــط علـــى الأجـــزاء الضّعيفـــة، وتوفيـــر الدّعـــم الهيكلـــي الـــلاّزم. ويُعـــزَّز هـذا الجهـد مـن خـلال الأبحـاث المسـتمرّة، والتّعـاون الوثيـق مــع خبــراء الحفــظ مــن حــول العالــم، لضمــان تطبيــق أحــدث وأدق الممارســـات فـــي هـــذا المجـــال. فـــي نهايـــة المطـــاف، لا يقتصـــر هدفنـــا علـــى الحفـــاظ المـــادي لهـــذه القطـــع، بـــل علـــى صـــون رســـالتها الثقافيّـــة والإنســـانيّة، لتبقـــى قـــادرة علـــى التّعليـــم والإلهـــام لأجيـــال قادمـــة. حيــن تنظريــن إلــى المســتقبل، كيــف تريــن قــدرة هــذه المجموعــة مــن المجوهــرات علــى إلهــام الأجيــال القادمــة، وتعزيــز تقديــر الجمهــور لــإرث الثقافــي لدولــة الإمــارات؟ فــي نهايــة المطــاف، نأمــل أن تُلهــم كل قطعــة فــي مجموعــة المتحـف الـزوّار، وتغـرس فـي نفوسـهم شـعورا أعمـق بالفخـر الوطنــي والانتمــاء. فحيــن يقــف الزّائــر أمــام هــذه الشّــواهد الحيّــة علــى التاريــخ، ويلمــس غنــى التّجربــة الإنســانيّة فــي هـذه الأرض منـذ فجـر الحضـارات، فـإن فهمـه لهويّــة المـكان وتاريخـه يتحـوّل مـن معلومـة إلـى إحسـاس. نطمـح إلـى أن يــرى كل مــن يدخــل المتحــف أن مــا بُنــي اليــوم مــن نهضــة وتقــدّم لــم يــأت مــن فــراغ، بــل هــو امتــداد لقيــم راســخة وممارســات عريقــة، آمنــت بهــا دولــة الإمــارات، واســتعانت بهــا لبنــاء نهضتهــا الحديثــة وإرثهــا الغنــيّ. ونأمــل أن يغــادر الزائــر وهــو يحمــل مســؤوليّة معنويّــة تجــاه هــذا الإرث، وأن يـرى دوره، لا كمُشـاهد للتّاريـخ، بـل كامتـداد لـه، ومشـارك فـي . كتابــة فصولــه القادمــة.

The prevalence of jewellery objects within the museum collection highlights the important role that jewellery has in tracing human history. Early in the muse- um journey, visitors will be introduced to the earliest civilisations in this land, and at this point will explore the very beginnings of adornment as a practice. The “Through Our Connections” gallery showcases the broadening horizons of the people of the ancient emirates and the impact of new technologies, materi- als and knowledge, culminating in the development of the Arabic language and the spread of Islam. The objects that will be on display within the different gal- leries of the museum play an integral role in shedding light on the practices and customs of communities at each milestone throughout the history of this land. In “To Our Roots”, the jewellery on display there will take the visitor on a jour- ney through Emirati identity by looking at the traditional lifestyle, customs, social and economic practices that prevailed in the inland areas of the emirates. What challenges do you face in conserving ancient jewellery, particularly fragile materials, and how do you address them? Conserving ancient jewellery presents a range of challenges, particularly due to the fragility and age of the materials involved. Organic components such as bone, shells and plant fibres are highly sensitive to environmental changes and can degrade rapidly if not handled with care. Metals like copper and silver are prone to corrosion, while delicate stones and beads may suffer from surface wear or structural weakness over time. To address these challenges, conserva- tors use highly specialised techniques tailored to each material. Stabilisation is a critical first step ensuring artefacts are stored in climate-controlled environ- ments with regulated humidity, temperature and light levels to prevent further deterioration. Additionally, custom mounts and supports are created for display and storage to minimise stress on fragile pieces. Ongoing research and collabo- ration with conservation experts around the world help ensure that the most up- to-date and effective preservation practices are in place. Ultimately, the goal is to safeguard these culturally significant objects so they can continue to educate and inspire future generations. Looking ahead, how do you envision this jewellery collection continuing to inspire future generations and deepen public appreciation for the UAE’s cultural heritage? Ultimately, our hope is that all of the objects within the museum collection will inspire and instill a greater sense of national pride in the UAE community. By witnessing the richness and depth of human history in this land firsthand, we hope that visitors to the museum will have a greater understanding of the his- tory this land and the values that have driven the UAE to become the thriving nation it is today and their individual role in its future success. .

تصوّراتهــا عــن الحيــاة ومــا بعدهــا. وهكــذا، تصبــح الزّينــة فــي السّــياق الإماراتـــي القديـــم أكثـــر مـــن مجـــرّد فـــنٍّ، بـــل بُعـــدا متأصّـــلا فـــي الرّؤيـــة الوجوديّـــة والثقافيّـــة للإنســـان. كيـف تُسـهم صـالات العـرض مثـل “إلـى أسـلافنا” و“ضمـن روابطنـا” و“مـن جذورنـا”، فـي وضـع المجوهـرات ضمـن السّــياق الأوسـع للسّــرد التاريخـي لدولـة الإمـارات؟ تحمــل كثافــة وجــود قطــع المجوهــرات فــي مجموعــة المتحــف دلالــة واضحــة علــى الــدّور المحــوري الــذي تؤدّيــه الزّينــة فــي تتبّــع مســيرة الإنســان عبــر الزّمــن. فمنــذ اللّحظــات الأولــى فــي رحلــة الزّائــر داخــل المتحـف، يتعـرّف إلـى أقـدم الحضـارات التـي عاشـت علـى هـذه الأرض، ويبــدأ باكتشــاف البدايــات الأولــى للزّينــة كفعــل إنســاني لــه رمزيّتــه ومعنـاه. فـي صالـة عـرض “ضمـن روابطنـا”، تنفتـح الآفـاق علـى عوالـم أوســع، حيــث تُبــرز المجوهــرات كيــف تفاعلــت المجتمعــات القديمــة فــي الإمــارات مــع التقنيّــات الجديــدة، والمــواد المســتوردة، والمعــارف المتبادلـة، وهـو مـا أدّى لاحقـا إلـى ظهـور اللّغـة العربيّــة وانتشـار الإسـلام. وهنــا، تلعــب القطــع المعروضــة فــي مختلــف صــالات المتحــف دورا جوهريّــا فـي إماطـة اللّثـام عـن الممارسـات والعـادات التـي شـكّلت حيـاة المجتمعــات فــي كل محطّــة مفصليّــة مــن تاريــخ هــذه الأرض. أمّــا فــي صالـة عـرض “مـن جذورنـا”، فتأخـذ المعروضـات الزّائـر فـي رحلـة داخـل الهويّــة الإماراتيّــة، مــن خــلال العــودة إلــى أنمــاط العيــش التقليديّــة، والعــادات الاجتماعيّــة، والممارســات الاقتصاديّــة التــي ازدهــرت فــي المناطــق الداخليّــة مــن الدّولــة. مــا التحدّيــات التــي تواجهونهــا فــي حفــظ المجوهــرات القديمــة، لا ســيّما تلــك المصنوعــة مــن مــواد هشّــة؟ وكيــف تتعاملــون معهــا؟ يُعــد حفــظ المجوهــرات الأثريّــة مهمّــة دقيقــة ومعقّــدة، وليــس بســبب قيمتهـــا التاريخيّـــة فحســـب، بـــل نظـــرا لهشاشـــة المـــواد التـــي صُنعـــت منهـــا، وتقدّمهـــا فـــي العمـــر. فالعديـــد مـــن المكوّنـــات العضويّـــة، مثـــل العظـــام، والأصـــداف، وأليـــاف النّباتـــات، شـــديدة الحساســـيّة للتغيّـــرات البيئيّــة، وقــد تتدهــور ســريعا إذا لــم تُعامَــل بعنايــة فائقــة. أمّــا المعــادن

Among the museum’s collection, which are the highlight piec- es that stand out as the most iconic or culturally significant – and why? One particular piece comes immediately to mind. Zayed National Mu- seum collection is home to one of the oldest pearls in the world: the Abu Dhabi Pearl. At around 8,000 years old, this natural pearl is one of the oldest known to be in existence. It was discovered on the floor of a Neolithic settlement in 2017 and it is believed that it could have been used as an adornment. The Abu Dhabi Pearl is one of the most signifi- cant discoveries on Marawah Island, a key archaeological site about 20 kilometres off the coast of the UAE and more than 100 kilometres west of Abu Dhabi. The finding also provides the earliest known evidence for pearl diving in the UAE. In the museum, the pearl will be displayed in the “To Our Ancestors” gallery, which examines evidence of human ac- tivity in this part of the world dating back more than 300,000 years and early trade with other societies in the Gulf region. Many of the jewellery pieces were discovered in burial sites. What can these finds tell us about the spiritual and societal roles of adornment in Emirati history? The discovery of jewellery in ancient burial sites reveals the profound spiritual and societal significance of adornment in the history of this land. These finds suggest that jewellery was not merely decorative – it held symbolic meaning and reflected the beliefs, identities and social structures of the communities that created and wore it. The careful placement of items such as necklaces, bracelets and pendants within graves indicates that jewellery played a role in burial rituals and was likely believed to accompany the deceased into the afterlife, offering protection, status or spiritual significance beyond death. These artefacts help us understand how ancient communities used jewellery to convey identity, honour the dead and express beliefs about life and death, mak- ing adornment a deeply embedded part of their cultural worldview. How do the galleries – such as “To Our Ancestors”, “Through Our Connections” and “To Our Roots” – help contextualise the jewellery within the broader narrative of Emirati history?
