Addressing Pediatric RSV Transmission Prevention

WHEREAS, the State of Louisiana has a high transmission rate of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), with 52.6 cases per 100,000 hospitalizations, and newborns are most impacted by RSV, with 90% of children having had at least one RSV infection.
WHEREAS, children are most commonly infected by RSV at schools, homes, and childcare facilities.
WHEREAS, the estimated financial burden of being hospitalized with RSV is $8,049-$12,125, totaling to a $709.6 million annual burden on the healthcare system to treat RSV.
WHEREAS, current therapy for RSV involves administration of Palivizumab to decrease hospitalization, especially in high risk infants, and prevent bronchiolitis and pneumonia.
WHEREAS, pregnant women can receive a one-time vaccine, RSVpreF (Abrysvo), during the first 32-36 weeks of pregnancy to prevent severe RSV disease by up to 82% in the first three months, therefore be it
RESOLVED That the Louisiana State Medical Society seek and/or support legislation for more pregnant women to receive the RSV vaccine to prevent transmission and infection; and be it further
RESOLVED that the Louisiana State Medical Society seek and/or support increased funding to research other vaccines available to children as part of their routine schedule of vaccinations to prevent RSV.
