WHEREAS, including gender minorities throughout the case development, training, and implementation of standardized patient encounters reduces bias and stereotyping 8 ; and

WHEREAS, medical students who care for 35 or more LGBTQIA+ patients annually reported significantly higher clinical preparedness and knowledge in caring for these patients 13 ; and

WHEREAS, in a study featuring multiple standardized patients portraying individuals with the same health history but different gender identities, 98% of students stated that the experience helped them to practice clinical skills needed to see real patients 14 ; and WHEREAS, students partaking in a standardized patient-based module with patients in the LGBTQIA+ community felt significantly more prepared to speak with LGBTQIA+ patients regarding their sexual history compared to before 2,11 ; now, therefore be it RESOLVED, that Louisiana State Medical Society recognizes the importance of LGBTQIA+ patient education and exposure in the early years of student’s medical education due to the lack of current curriculum regarding these patients; and, be it further

RESOLVED, that the Louisiana State Medical Society encourages the inclusion of LGBTQIA+ cases in standardized patient encounters.
