In July 2008, he moved to Sydney, Australia to take up the post of chairman and CEO of Pernod Ricard Pacic. Following a key strategic business review in July 2010, he was appointed chairman and CEO of Pernod Ricard Winemakers, the global wine arm of Pernod Ricard based in Sydney, Australia. He joined Irish Distillers as Chairman and CEO in July 2016. Edinburgh 2020 WDSC is returning to Edinburgh for the rst time since 2008, having been held in Glasgow in recent years, giving speakers and delegates the opportuni- ties to explore the many attractions of the Scottish capital. The chair of the WDSC 2020 organising committee is Dr Joe Arciero, sourcing director at Chivas Brothers and chair of the Scotch Whisky Association Scientic Working Group. Dr Dawn Maskell, associate professor and director of The International Centre of Brewing and Distilling at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, is managing the content for the scientic programme. Since its launch in the early 1980s, the conference has expanded to become the world’s leading gathering dedicated to distilled spirits. The 2020 conference will be a forum for industry and academic experts, along with trade and commercial partners, to meet and discuss all aspects of the distilled spirits industry and to network with peers. Next year’s Worldwide Distilled Spirits Conference (WDSC) in Scotland is shap- ing up to be an event not to be missed for anyone with a thirst for knowledge about the industry. T he seventh WDSC will be held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) from 25th to 28th May with the theme: ‘The spirit of diversity, knowledge and innovation’ , which reects the expansion of the spirits industry in recent years. The opening and closing speakers, who have just been conrmed, are sure to be major draw. Ulrich Adam, director general of spiritsEUROPE, will open the conference, while Jean-Christophe Coutures, chairman and CEO of Chivas Brothers, will conclude proceedings. The Scottish section of the Institute of Brewing & Distilling is calling on experts who would like to submit an abstract for WDSC 2020 to do so by the deadline of Friday 22 nd November. Authors wishing to present a paper or e-poster are invited to submit an abstract of a maximum of 300 words by that date for consideration. The conference is looking for a mix of scientic and technical presentations and posters. WDSC 2020 is the rst time the conference will feature the latest e-poster technology - the digital successor of the paper poster. All those accepted will have a short presentation slot and authors will not have to print and carry a traditional poster. Key themes for this year’s conference, which are designed to be thought-pro- voking and encourage a broad range of

•chemistry and avour of spirits; • consumer engagement and communication; • distillation processes - present and future; • diversity of process, category and people; • diversity of raw materials and their processing; • improving our environmental impact • innovation and diversity in fermentation. A range of interesting abstracts have already been submitted covering a range of topics across whisky, gin, sustainability in the spirits industry and many more. Keynote speakers Conference delegates will be looking forward to hearing from Ulrich Adam who joined spiritsEUROPE in January 2018. Prior to taking up that role, he was secre- tary general of the European Agricultural Machinery Industry Association (CEMA) for ve years. Previously, he worked for nine years in the Brussels ofce of the inter- national consultancy rm Hill & Knowlton Strategies, advising a wide range of com- panies and associations on EU legislation, with a particular focus on policies in the areas of food, health and agriculture. Ulrich is a German national who holds a PhD and MPhil degree in History and Social and Political Sciences from Cambridge University in the UK. And in his closing speech Chivas’ Jean-Christophe Coutures will be able to share his vast international experi- ence in the drinks industry. He took up his position as chairman and CEO in July last year following a move from Irish Distillers where he drove the business both at home and internationally. Born in a suburb outside Bordeaux,
