BREWING

The brewhouse was supplied by Lehui via SSV. The vessels to the rear are the mash mixer, lauter, copper and whirlpool. The prerun vessel is on this side of the working area

a minimum wage environment with a high churn of pub employees this remains an uphill struggle in Wales as much as it is anywhere else. The move to Pacic Road The move has cost around £10million and the project was ve years in ges- tation. Much of the plant was old when Bass sold it and now it was showing its age even more. Some large brewing contracts from the big boys were being wound up as they took production back in-house so the whole brewing operation was becoming severely sub optimal. Only keg and cask packaging were planned for the new site; small- pack at around 20% of output (Hall and Woodhouse for bottling and Marstons for cans) would continue to be outsourced, as would distribution which is in the capable hands of DHL Tradeteam. The project team trawled around for suitable sites; brownelds were considered as well as those with existing suitable buildings. The location was critical with ready access to the motorway network and not too many planning constraints as breweries

Crucially there was also good external space essential for brewery container storage and vehicle move- ments when most industrial units just have a bit of grass and a car park. The site was purchased at the end of 2017. The ofce space was refur- bished rst and HQ staff transferred to The Buhler four-roller mill with easy gap adjustment. The company had to get a new gas main laid over 1.2km when it found the UK HQ of Walter Schein which supplied dental surgery equip- ment from a full-height warehouse with ample ofce accommodation on two oors alongside.
