GNS visits new Thwaites Brewery Following Thwaites move from Blackburn town centre to the new site at Mellor Brook the Great Northern section enjoyed a visit to the new brewery and site. Former Head Brewer Brian Yorston returned to describe the move to the new site and new Head Brewer Mark O’Sullivan described the beer rebranding exercise which has resulted in a signicant increase in demand. Mark had been with Thwaites for 16 years in several departments and it was good to hear they intended to appoint a brewing apprentice as his replacement. To meet the demand for the beers which all goes to their own pubs and hotels, Thwaites have initiated a brewing plant expansion project to increase from one to two brews per day. The delegates enjoyed a tour around the brewery given by Mark and his colleague Harry Brunt

and a look at Thwaites magnicent horses before listening to Dr John Duffy of Smart Storm give a talk on efuent treatment in small brewer- ies.
