Thames Valley District School Board Update Crossing Guard Appreciation Day (March 31) This day brings recognition to the crossing guard program, as well as showcasing the hard work crossing guards do daily, regardless of weather or working conditions. Crossing Guard Appreciation Day also brings awareness to the safety of pedestrians within crosswalks and intersections and helps make crossing guards feel proud of the work they do every day. Please take a moment to express your appreciation to your local crossing guard! Community Engagement At the end of January, Trustee Moore attended an extraordinary Cultural Celebration at Wilfrid Jury Public School, along with Ward 7 Councillor Corinne Rahman. They brought greetings and enjoyed a variety of tasty samples of food from around the world as well as presentations of song, dance, and poetry from across the globe. The following week, Trustee Mai and Trustee Moore joined more than a thousand supporters, sponsors, and volunteers at the annual Youth Opportunities Unlimited (YOU) breakfast to raise funds and celebrate the incredible impact the organization has on London youth. London West MPP Peggy Sattler and Ward 9 Councillor Anna Hopkins were also in attendance to hear inspiring stories from young people who directly benefited from YOU’s support. A special shout-out goes to our neighbours Sheila and Wayne who were there to present a $1000 donation on behalf of Lambeth / Talbot Village, Byron, and Westmount! Thank you for making a difference in our community. At Eagle Heights Public School on February 11th, Trustees Mai and Moore celebrated the completion of an enormous addition and renovation project. Eagle Heights was built for 680 students, and before the expansion was completed, the school required 18 portable classrooms to accommodate more than 1,000 students. The Ministry of Education provided $9.2 million in funds to expand the school to accommodate 300 more students. School climate surveys Grade 5 to 12 students just completed the 2025 School Climate Surveys as mandated by The Education Act to foster a safe, inclusive environment for students. Conducted every two years, these anonymous and voluntary surveys allow students to provide honest feedback on issues such as bullying and harassment. Parents and caregivers are informed about the surveys and have the option to opt-out their children if they choose.

Left to right: Anna Hopkins, Sherri Moore and Beth Mai at the YOU Breakfast

The results of these surveys are vital for shaping the school’s approach to safety and inclusivity by informing the development of Safe and Inclusive School Plans and helping to monitor and track changes over time, ensuring that efforts to improve the school climate are effective. Community Input We want to hear from you! Please reach out to either of us if we can help you navigate a concern with the school board or if you have questions we can help answer. We were elected to represent your voice, and we appreciate the opportunity to listen to you.

Singathon at Cherry Hill Village Mall by Harry MacLean

The Karen Schuessler Singers (KSS) is one of London’s premier concert choirs. And while it always offers great concerts, it takes a bit of money to keep it on the road. That’s where its annual Singathon comes in. This year’s KSS Singathon took place on Saturday, February 1, in the food court at London’s Cherryhill Village Mall. Before the event, choristers hit on their friends and relatives for pledges, and at the Singathon, donations, song dedications and opportunities to conduct the choir brought in additional contributions. By the end of the Singathon, the choir was well within $2000 of reaching its $9000 goal. What will Singathon money do? It will ensure that, next year, there will be a concert with the London Symphonia orchestra. It means that the choir can buy more new music. It will mean that the choir can enhance its concerts by hiring top soloists, vocalists, and other musicians. If you missed this year’s Singathon but would still like to support KSS, please visit www.kssingers.com. Or come to a concert! Saints & Sinners on Saturday, March 1, promises much fun. Your Song with Jean Meilleur, Stephen Holowitz and band on Saturday, May 3, promises a rockin’ good time. Both will be held at 7:30 pm, Wesley-Knox United Church, London!

Out of the Woods and Into the Village by Donna Costa, Anne Kay, Brenda Martin and Martha Morrison, London Writers Society Writing can be a solitary craft. Since 2007, the London Writers Society (LWS) has created a community for local writers, offering workshops and events to help hone their skills and promote their work. With over 100 talented members, the Society was inspired to produce a collection of short stories and poems, titled Out of the Woods: Voices from the Forest City . This anthology is scheduled to launch June 3, 2025. For the anthology, LWS members were invited to submit stories and poems for consideration by a panel of local First Reader judges. All entries were anonymous to ensure impartial judging. “It was intriguing to read the submissions without knowing a thing about the author,” shares London author and first reader Anne Kay. “As I read the stories I laughed, I cried and I learned about a wide range of subjects. I was struck by the fresh and diverse voices that sang from the pages.” The First Readers generated a longlist for renowned author and London resident, Emma Donoghue, who selected 44 stories and poems for publication in the anthology. Among the finalists selected are two Hyde Park authors who contributed nonfiction short stories: Trudy Cloudt wrote Grandpa’s Harvest , which demonstrates the warm and authentic bond that forms between a grandson and his grandfather as he uses the experience of planting a garden to teach important life lessons. Trudy says, “My writing often reflects family life and my experiences growing up in a strong immigrant family.”

“I started writing in 2010 when I retired from a nursing career,” Mary Lou McRae says. “My anthology entry, Caravanning , is a humorous account of a 1962 family road trip from London to P.E.I. when I was a teenager: eight kids, two adults, and one dog in a trailer for three weeks and nine hundred miles – what could go wrong?” A grant to the Society from the London Arts Council through the City of London’s Community Arts Investment Program provided a crucial financial boost for the anthology, but funding is still needed to cover publishing costs. Individuals or businesses can learn about sponsorship opportunities at www.londonwriterssociety.ca/anthology.

London musician and music educator (and Oakridge resident) Phil Murphy was approached by Ron Webb, his playing partner that day and private saxophone student, about the possibility of forming a new concert band in London. Ron and a small group of fellow musicians were looking for an opportunity to play at a more advanced level than their present experience and Phil, with all his experience and musical contacts, was a great choice to help form and conduct this new ensemble. I ‘got tapped’ by Phil, back in the fall of 1993, to dust off my tuba, which had sat in a corner un-played for several years, to help form this new band. I was in the middle of my music teaching career, had a young family and was playing electric bass with Phil’s dance band on the weekends, so the tuba, my instrument of study at the Don Wright Faculty of Music, took a back seat in my life’s priorities, to the point that my wife suggested it would make a great planter in our front hall! Phil used this same approach with many of his music colleagues and former music students. A band name was chosen, a Board of Directors elected and our first season of concerts was underway. Today, Encore – The Concert Band is a well-established music ensemble in southwestern Ontario, recognized for its stellar reputation of performing traditional and contemporary works for band as well as an entertaining mix of musical arrangements our audiences can immediately relate to. Sherwood Branch Library Renovation The Sherwood Branch of the London Public Library has been welcoming people for more than 40 years. Renovations have begun to update the facility and create more welcoming spaces to gather and collaborate. New areas for youth and families will encourage creativity, while expanded program rooms and meeting spaces will support learning and connection for all ages. The library will be more energy-efficient and accessible. “This renovation is about restoration and opportunity,” said Ward 7 Councillor Corrine Rahman. “It’s about creating a space where families, library patrons, and staff can come together, engage, and connect. I think about the kids who will develop a love for books here, the students who will study and connect with friends, and the incredible ideas that will bubble up from the conversations that happen in this space. It’s truly inspiring to imagine the future of this branch.” Mayor Josh Morgan shared his excitement as well, saying, “The Sherwood branch is my home branch. It’s where I brought my kids to learn to read and where we joined programs as a family. This library is a hub for youth to meet friends, learn skills, and grow as leaders. The renovation will mean so much to this community and beyond.”

During the renovation, a pop-up library will offer some library services, Tuesdays 9 am to 9 pm and Wednesday to Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm. The library is scheduled to reopen by Fall 2025. Learn more and get updates at www.lpl.ca

Are you planning a road trip for March break? Consider these travel tips before leaving.

Before hitting the road, it’s crucial to make sure your car is dependable. While dealing with a breakdown on your daily drive is frustrating, being stuck in an isolated area can be far worse. To prevent this situation, carry out some basic maintenance checks prior to your trip. Begin by examining the six key fluids in your vehicle: engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Take into account the distance you’ve traveled since your last service and the length of your upcoming journey to identify which fluids may need topping up. If your trip coincides with a scheduled service, it’s wise to take care of it in advance. Also, check your tire pressure and consider rotating the tires, ensure the brakes are functioning well, inspect all belts and hoses, replace the cabin and engine air filters for better air quality, and confirm that all lights are operational. By following these steps, you can minimize the risk of car issues and concentrate on enjoying your adventure and creating lasting memories.

ARTISTS ALLEY Caraleen Baker-Allum

Caraleen Baker-Allum has been an artist for as long as she can remember. “I have studied art with many professional artists over the years and have experienced creativity in all mediums, oils being my favourite.” She also works in acrylics, watercolour and mixed media. Caraleen says that the most rewarding part of her artistic career has been the opportunity to use her creative skills as an adjunct to her career in human services. She has taught art to persons with developmental disabilities, brain injuries and mental illness and believes that “the rewards reaped from teaching far surpass the challenges one faces throughout the process”. A member of the Gallery Painting Group, Caraleen enjoys the friendships with other artists. “The camaraderie shared at our plein air paint-outs is genuine and inspires us to learn and grow artistically with each other.” Living in Oakridge for the past twenty years has provided Caraleen “with a great sense of community. Many of my neigh- bours are great supporters of the arts”. She is also a passionate knitter!

Talk to an Edward Jones advisor to help you focus beyond the election outcome and “vote” for sound investment principles, such as buying quality investments in a well-diversified portfolio and holding them for the long term. Although changes in government policies can affect investment returns, they’re much harder to predict than you might think, and the consequences of policy changes are usually not as expected. We think it’s better to follow time-tested investment principles and avoid letting politics influence your long-term strategy. How do politics impact the markets? During election years, politicians make many promises that go unfulfilled. That’s partly due to governmental systems of checks and balances. However, we believe market forces are more powerful than political forces over the long term. October 29th, 202 9:30am - 11:00am There’s almost always uncertainty about the short-term outlook. Politicians often raise many questions with few easy answers. If you’re feeling uncomfortable, remember this: The mix of investments you own will make a larger difference to your long-term “victory” or “defeat” as an investor than any election results. We believe equity market volatility related to political un- certainty can create attractive buying opportunities for long- term investors. It’s also important to ensure you have an appropriate type and amount of fixed-income investments. By maintaining an investment mix tailored to your situation, we think you’ll find it easier to look past short-term political and market uncertainties. December 10th, 2022 9:30am - 11:00am Edward Jones 1637 Hyde Park Rd. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. You may be surprised to learn that the stock market has increased regardless of which party controls parliament, with the S&P/TSX Composite providing an annualized return of roughly 10% since 1977.1 Although there has been volatility over the years, the stock market has done well regardless of which party holds office. These long-term results should serve to give you confidence in the market regardless of election results. While political leaders may enact laws and regulations in hopes of influencing economic growth, the results are not nearly as predictable as they might imagine. Economic indicators such as jobs, interest rates and inflation can sometimes run counter to prevailing policies. Do government policies impact your investment returns?

Ward 7 Update by Corrine Rahman, Ward 7 City Councillor crahman@london.ca 226-577-3774

Councillor Rahman’s Youth Team aims to interact with youth to provide information about local government, offer opportunities for volunteerism, leadership, and to help clean up the city to make a positive impact. As part of the Youth Team, volunteers will help with two volunteer opportunities sharing information in local neighbourhoods and joining London’s annual Clean and Green, which aims to reduce the amount of litter on our streets. There are three main opportunities for the Youth Team to get involved with the city! On March 22nd, I will be going door- to-door in new neighbourhoods, sharing information about how to connect with the City. On April 11th and 12th, we will continue the tradition of cleaning our City through the “20 minute makeover” and the “Community-wide clean-up.” The youth team will participate in London’s “Community-wide Clean-up” by signing up to clean up in parks, neighbourhoods and along our trails. The third opportunity will be Saturday, May 24th. The Youth Team will connect with Ward 7 residents to share information and collect their thoughts on initiatives in the City. Training will take place on Monday, March 17th. Volunteers will earn 10 hours towards their 40 hours of com- munity involvement (graduation requirement), which Councillor Rahman will sign off on, and gain valuable experience about local politics and giving back to the community. If you are between the ages of 14 and 18, sign up for my youth team, and email me at crahman@london.ca to join. Together we can make a difference! Yours in Community, Corrine Rahman

I hear often from parents and young people across the City that there needs to be more opportunities for youth to be active participants in our community.

Recently, Council created a youth representative position on all advisory committees to Council. I am looking forward to appointing youth to these roles this coming Spring. I got my start in municipal politics serving as a youth representative on a City centre taskforce. If it wasn’t for that opportunity and the opportunity to be mentored by a City Councillor, I wouldn’t be where I am today. With this in mind, alongside student volunteers, I am working on a new opportunity for youth in our community to get involved and make an impact by joining Councillor Rahman’s Youth Team! As London grows, youth deserve a voice in how our city makes changes. Our city’s youth will soon be the leaders that direct the change in our city, and when the time comes, we want them to have had enriching experiences that allow them to develop into great leaders.
