Ward 7 Update by Corrine Rahman, Ward 7 City Councillor crahman@london.ca 226-577-3774
Councillor Rahman’s Youth Team aims to interact with youth to provide information about local government, offer opportunities for volunteerism, leadership, and to help clean up the city to make a positive impact. As part of the Youth Team, volunteers will help with two volunteer opportunities sharing information in local neighbourhoods and joining London’s annual Clean and Green, which aims to reduce the amount of litter on our streets. There are three main opportunities for the Youth Team to get involved with the city! On March 22nd, I will be going door- to-door in new neighbourhoods, sharing information about how to connect with the City. On April 11th and 12th, we will continue the tradition of cleaning our City through the “20 minute makeover” and the “Community-wide clean-up.” The youth team will participate in London’s “Community-wide Clean-up” by signing up to clean up in parks, neighbourhoods and along our trails. The third opportunity will be Saturday, May 24th. The Youth Team will connect with Ward 7 residents to share information and collect their thoughts on initiatives in the City. Training will take place on Monday, March 17th. Volunteers will earn 10 hours towards their 40 hours of com- munity involvement (graduation requirement), which Councillor Rahman will sign off on, and gain valuable experience about local politics and giving back to the community. If you are between the ages of 14 and 18, sign up for my youth team, and email me at crahman@london.ca to join. Together we can make a difference! Yours in Community, Corrine Rahman
I hear often from parents and young people across the City that there needs to be more opportunities for youth to be active participants in our community.
Recently, Council created a youth representative position on all advisory committees to Council. I am looking forward to appointing youth to these roles this coming Spring. I got my start in municipal politics serving as a youth representative on a City centre taskforce. If it wasn’t for that opportunity and the opportunity to be mentored by a City Councillor, I wouldn’t be where I am today. With this in mind, alongside student volunteers, I am working on a new opportunity for youth in our community to get involved and make an impact by joining Councillor Rahman’s Youth Team! As London grows, youth deserve a voice in how our city makes changes. Our city’s youth will soon be the leaders that direct the change in our city, and when the time comes, we want them to have had enriching experiences that allow them to develop into great leaders.
