Members knitted and sewed for the soldiers overseas. In co-operation with the Birr Women’s Institute, the Hyde Park members canvassed London Township on behalf of the Red Cross. In 1917, the members canvassed again in support of the Queen Centennial parade, sponsored euchre parties, catered to Alexandra (later Beck Memorial) Sanatorium for tuberculosis patients, which opened in Byron. Institute members were also instrumental in having traffic lights installed at the community in 1926. Two years later, they sponsored the erection of a safety baseball stop on the school grounds and presented a flag to S.S. #17. The following year Historic Hyde Park: Hyde Park Women’s Institute On June 21, 1910, the Hyde Park branch of the Women’s Institute was organized. Community betterment projects of the Institute included contributing to a travelling library in 1912 and hosting a tea meeting in 1914 to raise funds toward building sidewalks in Hyde Park.
the Institute purchased a victrola so students could enjoy music in the classroom. During the Second World War, Institute members again supported Canadian soldiers by making homemade jams. The Institute branch sponsored both Brownie and Girl Guide Associations in the village. The Institute sponsored the first 4-H homemaking club for girls in 1952 and continued sponsoring clubs in the area for 36 years. When the Ontario government made the clubs co-educational in the 1980s, the Institute members dropped their support.
