Singathon at Cherry Hill Village Mall by Harry MacLean

The Karen Schuessler Singers (KSS) is one of London’s premier concert choirs. And while it always offers great concerts, it takes a bit of money to keep it on the road. That’s where its annual Singathon comes in. This year’s KSS Singathon took place on Saturday, February 1, in the food court at London’s Cherryhill Village Mall. Before the event, choristers hit on their friends and relatives for pledges, and at the Singathon, donations, song dedications and opportunities to conduct the choir brought in additional contributions. By the end of the Singathon, the choir was well within $2000 of reaching its $9000 goal. What will Singathon money do? It will ensure that, next year, there will be a concert with the London Symphonia orchestra. It means that the choir can buy more new music. It will mean that the choir can enhance its concerts by hiring top soloists, vocalists, and other musicians. If you missed this year’s Singathon but would still like to support KSS, please visit www.kssingers.com. Or come to a concert! Saints & Sinners on Saturday, March 1, promises much fun. Your Song with Jean Meilleur, Stephen Holowitz and band on Saturday, May 3, promises a rockin’ good time. Both will be held at 7:30 pm, Wesley-Knox United Church, London!

Photos by Brian Dalton Photos. Left to right: Karen at the mic. Lots of dedications throughout the afternoon! Kevin White kicked off Black History Month with his song about black Pullman porters. Simon Davis was the KSS “best Innkeeper in town” in a song from Les Miserables. Veteran broadcaster Joe Swan was a guest conductor. Others included London West NDP candidate Peggy Sattler, music professor emeritus Betty Anne Younker, and Mark Guiler. Bottom: The Singathon begins! It’s easy to see the enthusiasm. A big sound.
