London musician and music educator (and Oakridge resident) Phil Murphy was approached by Ron Webb, his playing partner that day and private saxophone student, about the possibility of forming a new concert band in London. Ron and a small group of fellow musicians were looking for an opportunity to play at a more advanced level than their present experience and Phil, with all his experience and musical contacts, was a great choice to help form and conduct this new ensemble. I ‘got tapped’ by Phil, back in the fall of 1993, to dust off my tuba, which had sat in a corner un-played for several years, to help form this new band. I was in the middle of my music teaching career, had a young family and was playing electric bass with Phil’s dance band on the weekends, so the tuba, my instrument of study at the Don Wright Faculty of Music, took a back seat in my life’s priorities, to the point that my wife suggested it would make a great planter in our front hall! Phil used this same approach with many of his music colleagues and former music students. A band name was chosen, a Board of Directors elected and our first season of concerts was underway. Today, Encore – The Concert Band is a well-established music ensemble in southwestern Ontario, recognized for its stellar reputation of performing traditional and contemporary works for band as well as an entertaining mix of musical arrangements our audiences can immediately relate to. Featuring a 5-concert season during the school year at Banting Secondary School, our present rehearsal and performance home, the group is financially supported by our audience ticket revenue and O rChards esH Local b PUMPKINS b SQUASH b SEASONAL PRODUCE yrup b Apple Cider b APPLE CIDER Vinegar ams b Peanuts b JERRY RADER PIES & MORE C runiCan C runiCan C runiCan 23778 RICHMOND ST NORTH (519) 666-0286 • crunicanorChardS.COM runiCan O rChards Local SQUASH b SEASONAL PRODUCE Cider b APPLE CIDER Vinegar uts b JERRY RADER PIES & MORE O rChards FresH Local Apples b PUMPKINS b SQUASH b SEASONAL PRODUCE Maple Syrup b Apple Cider b APPLE CIDER Vinegar Honey b Jams b Peanuts b JERRY RADER PIES & MORE runiCan Apples b PUMPKINS b SQUASH b SEASONAL PRODUCE Maple Syrup b Apple Cider b APPLE CIDER Vinegar Honey b Jams b Peanuts b JERRY RADER PIES & MORE O rChards FresH Local Apples b PUMPKINS b SQUASH b SEASONAL PRODUCE Maple Syrup b Apple Cider b APPLE CIDER Vinegar Honey b Jams b Peanuts b JERRY RADER PIES & MORE Just 10 minutes from Masonville Mon-Fri 9-6 • Sat 9-5 • Sunday 12-5
