Another of her favourites is a seaplane landing in Port Stanley in 1912, marking the celebration of the electrification of the London-Port Stanley Railway. “The pilot was actually a student of the Wright brothers, and he took people up for three days,” she says. “That was one of the first photos I saw in the collection that made me realize, ‘Wow, I didn’t even know this happened.’” One of the more humorous images shows a man sitting on a tree branch while another person takes his photo. “That one just makes me laugh every time,” says Madeleine. “People are the same — they’re going to take silly photos or take risks to get the perfect shot.” The exhibit also ties into the museum’s March Break activities. “We actually have a green screen program where visitors can time travel into a historic photo,” Madeleine explains. “Not everybody gets an opportunity to do a green screen, so it’s exciting for kids and adults. Plus, all the images used for the green screen are featured in the exhibit, so you can see the original and then place yourself in it.” Visitors can also make their own picture frames to take home with their printed green screen photos. Madeleine encourages those unfamiliar with the museum to visit. “Even if you’ve lived in the county your whole life, or if you’re new to the area, there’s always something new to learn,” she points out. “People like to see people doing things, and that’s what these photos capture — the lives that were lived, the moments people wanted to remember.” preserving memories. “Back then, taking a photo was an ordeal. It was an investment, something meant to be passed down to children and grandchildren. These snapshots tell stories, and I love that.” Photography, she notes, has always been about Through this exhibit, visitors can connect with Elgin County’s past, experiencing the moments and milestones that shaped the community, one photograph at a time.
