The Benefits of Networking for a Small Business Starting and growing a small business can be exciting and challenging. One of the best ways to navigate these challenges is through networking. Whether you’re just launching your venture or have been in business for years, connecting with other professionals can provide both social and business benefits. Networking is about building relationships, not just handing out business cards. It’s an opportunity to engage with like- minded business owners. Some may be new and facing similar hurdles, while others are experienced entrepreneurs willing to share their wisdom. Being part of a supportive community offers insight, inspiration, and encouragement. Networking can help spread the word about your business. Fellow business owners understand the value of word-of-

mouth referrals. Even if they don’t need your services, they may know someone who does. These personal recommendations can carry a lot of weight. St. Thomas offers excellent networking groups; here are but a few. Each month, The St. Thomas & District Chamber of Commerce hosts Business After Five for members. This relaxed event allows for business promotion and casual connections. The St. Thomas Executive Association (STEA), which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2024, emphasizes business referrals and strong relationships. For women in business, the Elgin Business Women’s Network provides support and empowerment. Young entrepreneurs can benefit from the Young Entrepreneurs’ Initiative, which offers resources and networking events. My Advice for Effective Networking: Simply having a membership isn’t enough — you have to show up. Regular attendance helps build credibility and connections. Once at an event, step out of your comfort zone. While it’s tempting to stick with familiar faces, real networking happens when you introduce yourself to new people. One of the great things about networking in St. Thomas is that local business owners genuinely support each other. Even if they don’t need your services, they’ll often connect you with someone who does. However, be mindful of not joining too many groups. If you spread yourself too thin, it’s difficult to form meaningful relationships. It’s better to be active in a few groups where you can both give and receive referrals. Finally, networking isn’t just about what you gain — it’s also about what you give. Support fellow members by referring business their way, making introductions, and taking a genuine interest in their success. When people see that you give as much as you take, they’ll be more likely to support you in return. Myself, I am an active member in both the Chamber of Commerce and the STEA. If you would like to attend either of these groups as my guest, or would like me to introduce you to some local businesses, just let me know and I would be happy to help!
