Emily Cocking ACIPP, payroll senior, OCL Accountancy : “I’m proud to say I chose payroll as a career straight after I finished my A levels. I knew payroll was the career for me instantly and I believe more young people will also choose payroll in the future. A lot of people do fall into payroll, but they always stay. Payroll is rewarding, challenging, gives you responsibility and I would recommend payroll as a career to anyone. My proudest moments are starting the Level 3 payroll apprenticeship, which I have almost finished, and coming to the CIPP office in Solihull, to film an interview for the be payroll campaign. This also resulted in me featuring in two CIPP magazines – me and my amazing dog, Gus!” Kay Augustus ACIPP, payroll application consultant, MHR: “I’m so proud to say I chose payroll as a profession. I have worked in it since I was And irrespective of how you entered the profession, what has prompted you to stay in the industry, and what’s your biggest achievement? Have a think about how you ended up in your current role, and what you’re most proud of as a consummate payroll professional.

PAYROLL

16, 21 years in and I still enjoy it. My journey started as a payroll administrator, developed to payroll manager, then payroll associate.

I’m now a payroll implementation consultant and just completed my payroll degree (and will hopefully graduate in November). I’m most proud of my degree. I was statemented dyslexic as a child and always told I would just about achieve Ds in GCSEs, so to come away with As and A*s was amazing – I worked so hard for those results. However, due to the negativity from teachers along the journey I didn’t want to stay in school or college. So, I didn’t think I would ever be seen in a cap and gown. Technically my biggest payroll achievement hasn’t happened yet … but it’s pending!” Samantha Johnson LLB (Hons) ChMCIPPdip, payroll services director, Dains Accountants: “I’m always proud to say I #chosepayroll as my career, I love working in such a fulfilling industry and having an impact on so many in the role that I do. Like others in the industry, I didn’t set out to pursue a career in payroll, but once payroll found me, and the more I found out about it, I’ve never wanted to go in any other direction. It’s complex, challenging, people focused and rewarding on so many levels. And the payroll community and support just adds to the benefits of making it your career.”

This is a two-part special, and the second part will be included in the October issue of Professional magazine, so if you responded and aren’t mentioned here, you will be in a future issue.
