For young patients with serious cardiac or respiratory issues, standard medical treatments may not always be enough. Fortunately, Rady Children’s is equipped with the technology and highly trained medical ŨŬŎėăŰŰĤŎŅØĺŰŹŎŎƫăŬØûƔØŅõăû̐ ĺĤėăŰØƔĤŅęŹĠăŬØŨĤăŰĺĤķă extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
ECMO is an external ûăƔĤõăŹĠØŹûŎăŰŹĠă ƕŎŬķŎėŹĠăĠăØŬŹØŅû ĺƀŅęŰ̐ ęĤƔĤŅęØŨØŹĤăŅŹ̵ Ű body time to rest ØŅûŬăõŎƔăŬėŬŎłŹĠă underlying injury or illness. It mechanically pumps blood outside the òŎûƛ̐ ŬăłŎƔĤŅęõØŬòŎŅ dioxide and returning oxygenated blood. Rady Children’s has been using ECMO since 1987.
