As an activist, the notion of rest as a form of resistance is a nov- el idea. But if saving ourselves is job #1 in order to sustain and fuel the revolution for both the short-term and the long haul, then rest is clearly a revolutionary act. A rest practice raises our awareness of what’s happening in our body, which teaches us to let go thus calming our nervous system. Practices also directly train our nervous system to let go. The nervous system loves cues and it learns very quickly how to do something through these cues. For example, a runner prepping for a race performs the familiar stretches and internal prep talk before getting into position WR VWDUW $OO WKHVH DFWLRQV DUH FXHV WR WKH QHUYRXV V\VWHP VLJQDOLQJ QHXURWUDQVPLWWHUDQGKRUPRQHUHOHDVHWRLQLWLDWHLQFUHDVHGEORRGÀRZ to the limbs; dilating lung vessels; heightening focus; and preparing the body and mind to run. Similarly, the rituals of our rest practice give our nervous system cues which cause heart rate and body temperature to drop, breaths to elongate, and muscle tone and mind activity to decrease, resulting in letting go mentally and emotionally.
