ANCC FOUNDATION DID YOU KNOW? Fleet Admiral (FADM) William D. Leahy – Member or Not? While it is universally recognized that four Five-Star officers (King, Marshall, Nimitz, and Bradley) were members of the Army Navy Country Club, some believe that FADM William D. Leahy (FDR’s senior military advisor during WWII) belongs on this list. Others do not. To understand the circumstances surrounding this controversy, click here . In America’s collective consciousness, Pat Nixon has long been perceived as enigmatic. She was voted “Most Admired Woman in the World” in 1972 and made Gallup Poll’s top ten list of most admired women fourteen times. She survived the turmoil of the Watergate scandal with her popularity and dig- nity intact. The real Pat Nixon, however, bore little resemblance to the woman so often described as elusive, mysterious and “plastic” in the press. Pat married Richard Nixon in June of 1940. As the cou- ple rose to prominence, Pat became Second Lady from 1953-1961 and then First Lady from 1969- 1974, forging her own graceful path between the protocols of the strait-laced mid-century and the bra-burning Sixties and Seventies. Pat was a highly travelled First Lady, visiting eighty-three countries during her tenure. After a devastating earthquake in Peru in 1970, she personally flew in medical supplies and food to hard-hit areas, meeting one-on-one with victims of the tragedy. The First Lady’s 1972 trips with her husband to China and to Russia were critical to the detente that resulted. Back in the US, Pat greatly expanded upon previous preservation efforts in the White House, obtaining more art and antique objects than any other First Lady. In the domestic arena, she was progressive on women’s issues, favoring the Equal Rights Amendment and backing a targeted effort to get more women into high level government jobs. Pat strongly supported nominat- ing a woman for the Supreme Court. She was pro- choice, supporting women’s reproductive rights publicly even before the landmark Roe v. Wade case in 1973. When asked to define her “signature” First Lady agenda, she defied being put into a box, often say- ing: “People are my project.” The Mysterious Mrs. Nixon, Heath Hardage Lee presents readers with the essential nature of this First Lady, an empathet- ic, adventurous, self-made woman who wanted no power or influence, but who connected warmly with both ordinary Americans and people from different cultures she encountered world-wide. 2025 ANCC Men’s “B” Team & Qualifying Dates
The ANCC Men’s “B” Team competition begins late April and is a great way to meet other ANCC members and play competitive golf against other clubs in the area. The ‘B’ Team is open to all men with course handicaps ranging from 5 to 16. Matches are held on Saturdays and/ or Sundays from late April thru late July (8 matches total) with playoffs held from August thru October. Signups for both tryout dates will begin 1 March 2025. Although you do not need to compete in both tryout dates (we take the best score from either round), however, it is recommended to try to compete in both as to increase your chances of making the team. Tryouts will be held on Saturday, 29 March at FFX, and on Sunday, 6 April at ARL. Due to new B-Team rules instituted by the League in early February, we will now use the lower of your 1 Feb 2025 index or your index just prior to the tryout date to calculate strokes given during the tryout. I have checked the local school spring break calendars to limit conflicts in scheduling and made sure nobody will miss any Masters action as well! For more ANCC ‘B’ Team information click here or contact Tom Gwilliam at thomasgwilliam@yahoo.com. 2025 Try Out Dates (tee times starting at/around 1200):
29 March 2025 at Fairfax 6 April 2025 at Arlington
Don’t miss out on a great experience competing against other country clubs and playing a variety of local courses. If you are 50 or older and retired from at least one occupation, you are eligible to join the league. ANCC fields two separate teams which are very competitive in league play -- one at Arlington and one at Fairfax. Both teams are always looking for new players. During the season the Arlington team will play 12 other teams both home and away for a 24-match season. The Fairfax team will play 10 other teams both home and away for a 20-match season. The League’s season runs from early April through early October. Play is on Thursday mornings and is four-ball match play with a 3-point Nassau, combined with a sweepstakes competition. We use handicaps in all matches and our team members have handicap indexes ranging from the single digits through the mid-thirties. As a team member, you will be assigned to play in at least a third of our matches during the season and may volunteer to play any matches to which you are not assigned. The home club provides practice balls and waives green fees. The home club also provides morning pastries, coffee, and a buffet lunch afterwards. The 2025 Army-Navy teams will be put together within the next few months and eligible ANCC members can sign up for either team. Visit the teams ’web pages on the ANCC website for signup instructions. Signups are open from now until 31 January 2025 for the Arlington Team and until 1 March 2025 for the Fairfax Team. The pages for the two teams can be found on the ANCC web site under Golf, ANCC Golf Organizations & Teams, Men’s Groups. We want to field the best players for each match. We also want to offer opportunities for interested players to showcase their talent. We will reserve 3 tee times, about 12:30-1:00 PM, at Fairfax on 22, 23, 29, and 30 March. The intent is to have fun, build camaraderie, and give everyone the chance to display their game. You can play all four times, or fewer, but we do expect everyone interested to play at least once (unless there are circumstances preventing you from playing). We also want to acknowledge the leadership and dedication of Lynn Wessman. Lynn has been the spirit of ANCC Senior Golf for many years. He will continue to support the competition as he co-leads the NOVA Golf Association. Thanks for a job well done! If you have a handicap of six (6) or below and are interested in being considered for the team, please contact the team Captain, Steve Galing at (703) 407-0703 or steven_galing@msn.com or Co-Captain, John Giuseppe at (703) 855-3047 or giuseppeje@gmail.com.
Spring Senior A-team competition is rapidly approaching! With the dissolution of the Washington Metropolitan Golf Association, the Northern Virginia Golf Association is revamping the Spring Senior A-team competition. Hence, participating clubs will be from NOVA (no MD clubs). They expect 16 clubs will participate. Although it is not “official” yet, the schedule we are planning for Senior A-Team looks like this: Bracket play 5, 6, 12 and 13 (rain make-up or schedule conflict alternate date) April Round of 8: Sat 19 April Easter Sunday 20 April --- no play. Semi-finals (round of 4) – Sat 26 April Finals -- Sun 27 April. Format: 2 best-ball scratch matches at each club (8 players total from each club; 4 play at home, 4 play on the road). Each match is worth 3 points: 1 for the front, 1 for the back, and 1 for the 18 holes. If a 9 or the 18 is tied, each team re- ceives ½ point. There is a total of 12 points. In the event of a tie, there is a sudden death playoff at the home club (the home club is identified before the match). 2025 NVGA Senior Men’s ‘A’ Team

The story of the ANCC’s Women’s 18-Hole Golf Organization (WGO-18) is one of progress, competition, camaraderie, and an unwavering love for the game that continues to inspire generations of women both on and off the course. With 100 years of ANCC history now celebrated, we are embarking on the upcoming centennial of WGO-18. Officially established in 1927, WGO-18 originally catered to the wives of military officers who enjoyed partici- pating in inter-service competitions. As women’s roles changed in society, so did the role of golf for women. With the formation of ANCC’s Women’s Nine Hole Or- ganization for the more recreational women golfers and the subsequent establishment of the ANCC’s Career Women’s Golf Organization for women in the work- force, along with the opening of ANCC to non-military members, WGO-18 continued to be the primary ANCC women’s group offering accomplished golfers the opportunity to compete together while enjoying the camaraderie of women who shared the same passion. This competitive spirit has flourished, leading members to achieve success in tournaments across Virginia, the DMV area, and the U.S., evolving into a vibrant commu- nity of talented female golfers. From the ranks of the Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA), where women were allowed to compete ANCC Centennial Celebration Women’s 18-Hole Golf Organization Celebrating 97 Years of Women’s Golf Excellence!
WGO-18: Women’s 18 Hole Golf Organization
After a long winter, WGO-18 ladies are looking forward to warmer weather and the beginning of the 2025 golf season! Congratulations to the many intrepid golfers who managed to play over 10 rounds this winter, competing in our Winter Golf ringers tournament. The new season officially kicks off March 25 with our Spring Luncheon, followed by our first Play Date on April 1. All lady golfers who enjoy playing 18 holes are encouraged to sign up! Please contact Membership Chair Ruth Daly at ruthadaly@verizon.net. Play is generally Tuesdays in Arlington and Fridays in Fairfax, with plenty of fun events interspersed with tournaments and play days.
beginning in1922, accomplished female golfers formed the first core group of WGO-18 ladies. Around 1928, WGO-18 joined the newly formed Women’s District of Columbia Golf Association (WDCGA), and in 1962, theArlington Fairfax County Women’s Golf Association (ARFAX) was established with WGO-18 ladies among its founding members. As the premier women’s competitive golf organization at ANCC, the breadth of talent cultivated over the years within WGO-18 is extensive, with our members earning numerous championships in VSGA, WDCGA, ARFAX, and the Women’s Military Dependents’ Golf Championship. In addition, WGO-18 ladies have served in various top leadership roles in these organizations. Currently, WGO-18 ladies fill multiple teams in both WDCGA and ARFAX each year and are often winners. Our members have especially excelled within the VSGA. The ANCC State Team is tied for the second most championships, boasting 15 wins, largely thanks to WGO-18 members who have been joined by other ANCC ladies in recent years. Notably, our ownShelley Savage has captured nine VSGA Championships, ranking as the fifth most successful competitor since women began participating in the VSGA in 1922. The Women’s Military Dependents’ Golf Championship, initiated at Andrews AFB in 1962, has seen our ladies travel nationwide for many of the 50 years, winning and placing successfully. At competitions, like the one held at Nellis AFB, nearly every participating WGO-18 member claimed a prize! Volunteering is a hallmark of our ladies, who have long supported charitable endeavors. For approximately 25 years, WGO-18 members have raised over $55,000 for Breast Cancer Research, aiming to help find a cure. In recent years, WGO-18 ladies have also stepped forward during the holidays, raising about $21,000 in total for the Children’s Homeless
Playtime Project, assisting up to 60 families each year. Prior to raising money, we donated gifts to the families for the Christmas holidays. Additionally, we support the VSGA Scholarship for young women pursuing golf. Our involvement extends to volunteering at the Junior Solheim Cup hosted at ANCC and other local events, including LPGA and PGA tournaments. Our own Mary Ann Cronin and past member Cathy Reuche have served as rules officials for various tournaments nationwide, and this year, Mary Ann has been invited to be a Rules Official at the US Women’s Open in Wisconsin. Throughout the year, WGO-18 hosts at least ten of our own tournaments and participates in many more with ARFAX, WDCGA, VSGA, and our own ANCC, and are quite often winners. Yet WGO-18 women are not just about competition; we also enjoy a vibrant social scene with numerous luncheons and gatherings. To say that WGO-18 women are talented is an understatement. Many are not only exceptional golfers but also successful retired military officers and high-powered professionals in both government and private sectors. Indeed, WGO-18 exemplifies the best of women and ANCC. We play Tuesday at Arlington and Fridays at Fairfax during the golf season. The handicaps of our members range from three to 36, and any woman who enjoys playing 18-holes is warmly invited to become a member; please contact Ruth Daly at ruthadaly@verizon.net.

In 1951, Lucille Sadtler, an active member of the ANCC Women’s Golf Organization, asked the Men’s Golf Committee for permission to form a subgroup of the women’s organization for those members wishing only to play nine holes. The Golf Committee granted the request, giving limited independence from the long-standing women’s 18-Hole golf group. In the first few years, the 9-Holers grew from 40 to 80 members, still under the auspices of the 18-Hole group. By 1962, it was the largest women’s group at the club, with 260 members and a dedicated Chairman. In December 1962, then-Chairman Fran Ryon submitted a request to the Golf Committee for the 9-Holers to become a separate and independent organization from the 18-Holers. At the time, 10 other country clubs in the region had independent women’s 9-Hole groups, and separation allowed ANCC golfers to compete in local matches with the league that evolved to become the Maryland-Virginia Team Match Association (MVTMA). The Golf Committee granted the request on January 21, 1963, thus beginning the existence of the Women’s Nine Hole Golf Organization (WNHGO) as an official, independent group at ANCC. The MVTMA began in 1961, also spearheaded by ANCC’s Fran Ryon and other interested Maryland and Virginia clubs looking for interclub 9-hole golf competition. The first match was held at the ANCC Fairfax course with Woodmont winning. Other participants included Belle Haven, Woodlawn, Mount Vernon, Columbia, Court House (now CC of Fairfax), Indian Spring, Manor, and Westbriar (now Westwood). Since 1961, Army Navy has been the Club Champion 15 times. The last year we held the title was in 2016 with a team led by captains Rita Kuntz and Mary Helmantoler. WNHGO: Women’s Nine Hole Golf Organization - Almost Seven Decades
Moving forward to 2025, today WNHGO has 65 active members with a range of skill levels who love the 9-hole experience, coupled with friendly competition and wonderful camaraderie. Our four major tournaments include the Committee Cup (est. in 1960); the Championship (est. in 1962); the Memorial Cup (est. in 1974), and the Haffey Memorial (est. in 1991). Each of the major tournaments takes place over two days, and a trophy is awarded to the winner of each. Seeing the names on the trophies from the last 62 years truly paints a great history. WNHGO’s six 1-day themed events include the Spring Jamboree scramble, Match Play Madness, Armed Forces scramble, Flag Day, Beat the Pro, and Fall Fest. We also have a Hole-in-One competition dating back to 1962. Our most recent winner was Marcia Carlucci in May 2022. We continue to participate in MVTMA matches and Invitationals and are hosting an Invitational at Fairfax in September 2025. WNHGO is very proud of our history, traditions, love of golf, deep friendships, and good sportsmanship. We firmly believe the adage that “every day on the golf course is a good day.” A fun fact: the WNHGO Championship has been held almost every year since 1962. In these 62 years, Ginger Murray has the most wins (8 wins between 2004-2017), followed closely by Nancy Fitzgerald (6 wins between 1991-1997).
Front Carole DeLong, MJ Smith, Mary Kathryn Horner; Back Gerry Bian, Terrie Spiro and Jan Wiley
In 1992, five women golfers worked with PGA and LPGA professional MJ Smith to create a ladies golf organization for those who could not play with the other ANCC wom- en’s golf groups because of their jobs. Thirty-three years later, this group is the Career Women’s Golf Organization (CWGO), a vibrant part of the ANCC community that welcomes working women of all golfing abilities. Formerly known as the Working Women’s Golf Organiza- tion, the group grew from 80 members in the first years to 180 today. Then, like now, the cadre of active partici- pants fluctuates as members’ careers, families and other demands compete with golf. We will forever be grateful to our Founding Mothers and MJ who had the foresight to establish a golf group for the sole purpose of providing working women, both military and civilian, an opportunity to connect through golf. The concept of “career women’s golf” quickly spread be- yond ANCC. In 1993, the first Career Women’s Interclub Program started at Mount Vernon Country Club. In large part through the dedication and determination of MJ and long-time pro Pete Stassi, other clubs joined the league. Today there are 14 country clubs in the region participat- ing in the Career Women’s Interclub. ANCC captured the CWGIC League Trophy 16 years between 1995-2024. In addition to participating in Interclub, the CWGO has many active members in the Arlington Fairfax Women’s Golf Association and the Women’s District of CWGO Going Strong with 33 Years of Golf, Fun & Friendship
CWGO: Career Women’s Golf Organization
The members of the Career Women’s Golf Organization are looking forward to spring and the resumption of our events and play days. The members of your Board are busy planning for our 33rd season! For those of you new to the club or new- er to golf, please see our longer insert in this newsletter for a description of our rich history and please consider if you’d like to join us! Please mark your calendars for our kickoff luncheon and 9-hole golf scramble to be held on Sunday, 30 March at Arlington at 11:15 in the Richardson Room. Registration will open soon, so please continue to check our webpage here . We’d love to see as many of our old and new members at these events as possible! If you are considering membership and have any questions, please contact CWGO.membership@gmail.com.
Another tradition and true highlight of the season is the Ladies Member-Guest. CWGO held its first one on its own in 1993 when it began at 1 pm and finished in the dark. The organizers got wiser with scheduling, and with cooperation of the golf staff got better results. The CWGO and Women’s Golf Organization-18 combined their Member-Guests in 2017 and then in 2021, head golf pro Greg Scott wisely initiated the ANCC Ladies Member-Guest open to all women, including the Women’s Nine Hole Golf Organization and unaffiliated lady golfers. Every year it has had fun themes, great prizes, generous sponsors, many guests from nearby and distant golf clubs, and special features like a Par-3 Challenge and put- ting contests. The CWGO has enjoyed tremendous support from all quarters of club staff, none greater than the golf and catering staffs, who always go above the call of duty to ensure our Member-Guest is a huge success. It grows in popularity every year. Another tradition is the Working Women’s Off-Site Fall Outing (WWOFO), a two-day event at a resort usually within 3 hours’ drive. The golf features fun formats and some irregular rules to make the difficult game of golf a little more light- hearted. The WWOFO Champion has the dubious honor of being crowned WWOFO Queen and planning the following year’s outing. This event caps the year in many ways, and a waitlist forms as soon as the venue is announced during the spring kickoff event. One tradition that did not stick was an effort to institute a winter/spring trip to Myrtle Beach. Held over four years in the mid-‘90s, this first attempt was shelved due to persistently cold or rainy weather. CWGO uses its strength in numbers and spirit for good causes as well. We honor our fallen members with a Memorial Garden at Arlington and drink a toast to them during our an- nual Memorial Tournament. We also self-fund Care Bags for breast cancer patients at Walter Reed and Belvoir Community Hospitals. Each year, CWGO receives thank-you notes from women going in for their first treatment who were comforted by a bag of snacks, games, and other items to help them get through a very long and difficult day. From 2012-2024 approx- imately 600 Care Bags were distributed. Last year, during the Holiday Season, we sponsored 65 children from the Homeless Children’s Playtime Program in hopes they would enjoy the holidays like every other child. The bonds built over these years inspired dozens of past members (many traveling from as far away as California) and 17 of our past presidents, to attend our 30th Anniversary Cele- bration. Again the club provided an outstanding venue for an afternoon of golf and an evening celebration where the golf staff served as emcees for a funny and moving tribute.

Columbia Golf Association where we compete and serve as volunteers supporting both organizations. Early on the fledgling CWGO played only 9 holes on Satur- days but soon these became 18-hole rounds. Later, play days expanded to 9 holes at 5 pm on Wednesdays in Arlington and then also on Thursdays at Fairfax. Saturday play days are high- lighted by monthly 18-hole tournaments, again alternating between both courses. Many CWGO events have evolved into traditions. Each year CWGO holds a Member-Junior tournament where we golf 9 holes with the juniors and present prizes during a dinner that includes the parents and often siblings. CWGO is also active in planning an annual Nine, Wine and Dine with the other women’s golf organizations in an effort to build camaraderie

Q & A with Neil: Q: What do you like most about working at ANCC? A: I enjoy being part of an amazing team of profes- sionals while providing the highest level of service to the membership. ANCC is a special place filled with members and staff who truly care about the club. Q: What do you like most about coaching tennis? A: Coaching has always been a passion of mine and while it’s difficult to pinpoint one thing it would have to be simply watching people improve and seeing them smile on the court! Along with the great lines and lingo from the young kids that make me laugh. Q: Who is your favorite professional tennis player, and why? A: This is a tricky question, as many of you know I love professional tennis. I would have to go with Andy Murray as being British and watching him win Wimbledon is probably my all time tennis highlight! Q: In your own game, what is your favorite shot to hit? A: Any shot that wins the point! Tennis Tip from Neil: Consistency is the key to being a good tennis player. I know it sounds obvious but the way to win matches is by having fewer unforced errors than your opponent and not necessarily more winners. It feels good to hit winners but even the pros rarely ever have more winners than errors throughout a match. Clean up your mistakes and the victories will come!
