beginning in1922, accomplished female golfers formed the first core group of WGO-18 ladies. Around 1928, WGO-18 joined the newly formed Women’s District of Columbia Golf Association (WDCGA), and in 1962, theArlington Fairfax County Women’s Golf Association (ARFAX) was established with WGO-18 ladies among its founding members. As the premier women’s competitive golf organization at ANCC, the breadth of talent cultivated over the years within WGO-18 is extensive, with our members earning numerous championships in VSGA, WDCGA, ARFAX, and the Women’s Military Dependents’ Golf Championship. In addition, WGO-18 ladies have served in various top leadership roles in these organizations. Currently, WGO-18 ladies fill multiple teams in both WDCGA and ARFAX each year and are often winners. Our members have especially excelled within the VSGA. The ANCC State Team is tied for the second most championships, boasting 15 wins, largely thanks to WGO-18 members who have been joined by other ANCC ladies in recent years. Notably, our ownShelley Savage has captured nine VSGA Championships, ranking as the fifth most successful competitor since women began participating in the VSGA in 1922. The Women’s Military Dependents’ Golf Championship, initiated at Andrews AFB in 1962, has seen our ladies travel nationwide for many of the 50 years, winning and placing successfully. At competitions, like the one held at Nellis AFB, nearly every participating WGO-18 member claimed a prize! Volunteering is a hallmark of our ladies, who have long supported charitable endeavors. For approximately 25 years, WGO-18 members have raised over $55,000 for Breast Cancer Research, aiming to help find a cure. In recent years, WGO-18 ladies have also stepped forward during the holidays, raising about $21,000 in total for the Children’s Homeless

Playtime Project, assisting up to 60 families each year. Prior to raising money, we donated gifts to the families for the Christmas holidays. Additionally, we support the VSGA Scholarship for young women pursuing golf. Our involvement extends to volunteering at the Junior Solheim Cup hosted at ANCC and other local events, including LPGA and PGA tournaments. Our own Mary Ann Cronin and past member Cathy Reuche have served as rules officials for various tournaments nationwide, and this year, Mary Ann has been invited to be a Rules Official at the US Women’s Open in Wisconsin. Throughout the year, WGO-18 hosts at least ten of our own tournaments and participates in many more with ARFAX, WDCGA, VSGA, and our own ANCC, and are quite often winners. Yet WGO-18 women are not just about competition; we also enjoy a vibrant social scene with numerous luncheons and gatherings. To say that WGO-18 women are talented is an understatement. Many are not only exceptional golfers but also successful retired military officers and high-powered professionals in both government and private sectors. Indeed, WGO-18 exemplifies the best of women and ANCC. We play Tuesday at Arlington and Fridays at Fairfax during the golf season. The handicaps of our members range from three to 36, and any woman who enjoys playing 18-holes is warmly invited to become a member; please contact Ruth Daly at ruthadaly@verizon.net.
