In 1992, five women golfers worked with PGA and LPGA professional MJ Smith to create a ladies golf organization for those who could not play with the other ANCC wom- en’s golf groups because of their jobs. Thirty-three years later, this group is the Career Women’s Golf Organization (CWGO), a vibrant part of the ANCC community that welcomes working women of all golfing abilities. Formerly known as the Working Women’s Golf Organiza- tion, the group grew from 80 members in the first years to 180 today. Then, like now, the cadre of active partici- pants fluctuates as members’ careers, families and other demands compete with golf. We will forever be grateful to our Founding Mothers and MJ who had the foresight to establish a golf group for the sole purpose of providing working women, both military and civilian, an opportunity to connect through golf. The concept of “career women’s golf” quickly spread be- yond ANCC. In 1993, the first Career Women’s Interclub Program started at Mount Vernon Country Club. In large part through the dedication and determination of MJ and long-time pro Pete Stassi, other clubs joined the league. Today there are 14 country clubs in the region participat- ing in the Career Women’s Interclub. ANCC captured the CWGIC League Trophy 16 years between 1995-2024. In addition to participating in Interclub, the CWGO has many active members in the Arlington Fairfax Women’s Golf Association and the Women’s District of CWGO Going Strong with 33 Years of Golf, Fun & Friendship
