Study Shows Up To 3.8 Million Manufacturing Jobs Needed By 2033 A new study released by the Manufacturing Institute (MI) and Deloitte, “Taking charge: Manufacturers support growth with active workforce strategies,” examines the workforce challenges that manufacturers are facing as well as the investment and skills likely required to drive continued growth across the industry. The MI says the US manufacturing industry has emerged from the pandemic on a strong growth trajectory and continued growth is ex- pected over the next 10 years as companies work to meet evolving customer demands, de-risk their supply chains and leverage government incentives and policies. Despite substantial growth in the sector, U.S. manufacturing faces a skills gap and tight labor market.
“Manufacturers recognize that the workforce is evolv- ing. Pandemic-driven shifts have already created hun- dreds of thousands of new jobs, and now we are seeing increased demand for digital skills that need to be met or risk further widening of the talent gap,” said Manufacturing Institute President and Executive Director Carolyn Lee. “Companies must prioritize technology, training and talent development, and the investments that are driving growth will also require the industry to build out a talent ecosystem. With investments in partnerships, apprentice- ships, and education, and prioritizing a more diverse and inclusive workforce, a whole host of new talent will be on the factory floor and driving the next wave of growth.” The study shows that workforce challenges are among the top concerns for US manufacturers, and have been since Q4 2017, except during the pandemic. The MI and Deloitte projects that as many as 3.8 million
additional employees could be needed in manufacturing between 2024 and 2033. Filling open positions—and keeping them filled—is a top concern for many manufac- turers. The MI and Deloitte predicts that as many as 5 in 10 of the skilled open posi- tions, 1.9 million jobs could remain unfilled if manufacturers are not able to address the skills and applicant gaps. “The manufacturing industry is facing exponential opportunity, yet still should prioritize strategies that will address the skills and applicant gap, especially as the acceleration of digital skills-based jobs continues,” said John Coykendall, princi- pal, Deloitte Consulting LLP, and vice chair, U.S. industrial products and construction leader. “Developing talent—both from with- in the existing employee base and those newly entering the workforce—is import- ant to keeping up with the pace of contin- ued innovation. Companies who invest in upskilling the workforce through training, technology and policies that meet employ- ee expectations are well-positioned for fu- ture growth.” More than 9 in 10 manufacturers said they are forming at least one partnership to improve job attraction and retentio The top five partnership types are with: technical colleges (73 percent), industry associations (58 percent), universities (48 percent), state and regional economic de- velopment agencies (47 percent), and K-12 schools (44 percent). Many partnerships are geared towards building, leveraging and supporting train- ing programs—helping address the needs to develop new talent.

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

Printed Specialties (CONT’D FROM PAGE 16)
Printed Specialties specializes in UV printing of high-val- ue folding cartons for industries like retail, food, beverag- es, and healthcare. Its services range from package de- sign and UV printing to specialty coatings, foil stamping, embossing, die cutting, assembly, and fulfillment. With the addition of the new press, the firm is attracting a lot of new activity and is allowing them to seek new cus- tomers due to its added capacity and confidence in print and quality. “We exceeded our expectations for the new Rapida 106 as far as makeready reductions including time and material consumed,” says Smith. “We calculated our ROI payback on a substantial increase in run speed along with a decrease in makeready time. With Koenig & Bauer’s efforts in training and education, we hit those targets out of the gate.” One of the best reasons that Printed Specialties found in its switch to Koenig & Bauer is that its press operators are praising the software’s ease of use on the Rapida 106 and its user-friendly interface. The operators find the new press to be easy to navigate and produce jobs faster and more efficiently. “Our new Rapida 106 press has been a great addition to our manufacturing team,” says Smith. “Koenig & Bauer has been a great partner to us in this journey. The whole team has been responsive and knowledgeable, and we’ve been extremely happy with the purchase.”

ranging from Mini to Jumbo, catering to diverse operation- al needs. “I was talking to one of the senior engineers to get a sense of how LMC machines performed,” Levine ex- plained. “They spoke very highly of the machines, noting that they were real workhorses, very consistent, durable, and offered great uptime.”
Irving’s son, Allan Levine, joined MannKraft in the early 1960s, contributing to the company’s success until it was sold in 1977. In 1987, Allan ventured out on his own and ac- quired Paige Company, a modest file box business known for pioneering an easy-setup file box. Today, Paige Company has expanded exponentially to deliver various packaging solutions, from standard regular slotted containers (RSCs) to custom, value-added packag- ing. The company excels in litho mounting, display pack- aging, and e-commerce packaging, often incorporating specialized features such as inside and outside printing, die-cutting, and intricate gluing for items like auto-lock bottoms and four- and six-corner trays. Paige Company Discovers Latitude Machinery Corp. As the company continued to grow, Paige Company identified a need for a machine that could fulfill the chang- ing needs of its operations. “We felt that we needed a mid- sized flexo folder gluer,” said Michael Levine, third-gen- eration packaging professional and President of Paige Company. “It was a good, sweet spot for us to take some pressure off our mini, as we were running a lot of mid- sized boxes on that smaller machine.” Paige Company’s introduction to Latitude Machinery Corp. (LMC) came in 2020 through their partnership with a leading global box maker. LMC offers gear- and ser- vo-driven flexo folder gluers and rotary die cutters in sizes
Inspired by the endorsement and firsthand observa- tions, Paige Company decided to invest in an LMC 42”x98” PP2-1025, confident in its potential to deliver consistent, reliable performance for their growing operations. “The LMC PP-Series delivers excellent output based on our product mix. You could spend double on other equip- ment, but I’m not convinced the ROI would be there,” said Levine. Equally crucial to ensuring long-term returns is having dependable maintenance and support—a cornerstone of Paige Company’s investment strategy. Since 2019, SUN Automation has been the exclusive representative for LMC machinery, parts, and support in North and Central Amer- ica. “We heard excellent things from a leading box maker regarding SUN’s support after they took over LMC’s main- tenance and spare parts responsibilities,” Levine said. “Their service is fantastic—good parts availability, quick technician response, and minimal downtime.” Operational Results And Impact The LMC PP2-1025 allowed Paige Company to achieve significant gains in production efficiency, enabling them to run up to 400,000–500,000 square feet per shift and consolidate one of their production lines for a major re- cord storage company: “We were running one of their main products, die-cutting it, and then using a special folder gluer,” explained Levine. “With the LMC PP2-1025, Operators load sheets into an LMC Flexo Folder Gluer.

A standout feature was the machine’s advanced scrap removal unit, which uses beater bars, offset nips, blowers, and brushes to effectively remove die-cut scrap just before the boxes enter the folding rails. “The scrap removal unit is really the key to being able to run high-volume orders,” said Levine. “With the scrap removal on the PP2-1025, we are able to easily handle large amounts and waste and Looking ahead, Paige Company is gearing up for sig- nificant upgrades and expansions.
