“I was so worried the entire tree would fall on my home,” explains Gail. “Being on a fixed income, I couldn’t afford the $12,000- $15,000 to have it removed.” That all changed when Gail received a postcard in the mail promoting the Invest Atlanta Owner Occupied Rehab Program. The program was created to help legacy residents remain in their homes by providing forgivable loans to help cover needed repairs. For Gail, that assistance included removing the tree, along with restoring her back porch stairs and repairing her roof. To her surprise, Gail also qualified to have her increase in property tax paid for through the Anti- Displacement Tax Relief Fund. Gail says the Invest Atlanta team was helpful throughout the process and that she’s incredibly grateful to have received the assistance. “This program is important for people like me who don’t have the extra funds to make these kinds of home improvements,” she says. “It’s a tremendous blessing and alleviated a huge burden. I couldn’t afford to live anywhere else, and I wouldn’t want to.”

By offering crucial support to vulnerable homeowners facing the burden of escalating property taxes, particularly in areas of rapid gentrification, we ensure that our seniors, who have invested their lives in our neighborhoods, are not forced out by economic forces beyond their control.
