Making Your First Home Happen

Local Decisions. Local Lenders. All our lending decisions are made locally, and we’re committed to providing personal, responsive service throughout. We also believe in the power of community, supporting nearly 700 organizations, non-profits and events with our time and resources. Strength That Matters. As one of the nation’s strongest community banks, First PREMIER has the financial capability for today’s mortgage market. We understand the different neighborhoods, local tax structures and other factors that may impact your monthly payments, allowing us to look out for you in ways that really make a difference.

As one of the nation’s strongest community banks, First PREMIER Bank understands the excitement and challenges of buying a home for the first time. As a South Dakota Housing approved lender, we have access to an array of affordable housing solutions and money-saving programs to fit your financial situation. Financial Options for First-Time Buyers. Just a few interest points can mean thousands of dollars over the life of a home loan. The team at First PREMIER can help you understand your options and see what programs you may qualify for. We recognize getting a home loan can be overwhelming and we’re committed to being by your side from application to close.

Four Tips for First-Time Buyers First PREMIER is committed to helping you find the right financing to make your first home happen. We work hard to make the process as smooth as possible. Once we’ve approved your application and started processing your home loan, follow these first-timer tips to prevent hassles, hang-ups or added stress. Avoid quitting your job, becoming self- employed or changing employers. Steady employment is critical to securing a home loan. Most lenders require two years at one job. Switching employers mid-process may delay your home. Don’t fall behind on any of your current payments. Your payment history makes up more than one-third of your credit score. Just one late payment before closing could sink the deal. Don’t finance new cars, furniture, flooring or any other major purchases. Your debt-to- income (DTI) ratio is a significant factor when considering your qualification level. If you add more debt during the process, it could affect your terms. Additional credit checks may also negatively impact your credit score, potentially changing your rate and loan eligibility. Avoid spending your savings. Unless you do a First-Time Homebuyer loan or have negotiated with the seller, your down payment and closing costs won’t be covered in your loan. You may need your savings to help cover these costs on closing day. 1 2 3 4

Bringing Fairy Tales to Life

Simply ever after entertainment

For many children, the magic of fairy tales is confined to books. But for kids in South Dakota, a locally owned company is literally bringing storybook magic to life. Simply Ever After Entertainment , headquartered in Sioux Falls, takes that magic a step further, transforming dreams into reality by bringing beloved characters to parties and events. Founded in 2015 by Lindsay Lindaman , Simply Ever After has become a cherished part of the community and the business owner's life.

brought me the idea after hearing about it on the radio, I thought, ‘Could I do this?’” shared Lindaman. Lindaman has always been passionate about reading and storytelling throughout her life, so this venture was right up her alley. “I started researching costumes and wigs right away,” said Lindaman. “Simply Ever After was created on a whim, but it became something special.” Simply Ever After Entertainment has a set goal of bringing joy to children and their parents, as well as teaching them the lessons of fairy tales and superheroes: To be kind and have courage.

CULTURE + ENTERTAINMENT

“I’m an art teacher. Constructing things has always been something I was naturally gifted at from a very young age.” - Lindsay Lindaman

As a full-time art teacher, Lindaman strives to see the future world prioritizing those traits. “If we can put on a great performance and influence others to be kind, I feel I’m fulfilling my purpose,” revealed Lindaman. As the owner of her business, Lindaman wears many hats—working as the wig stylist, photographer, secretary, business manager, and scheduler. “I handle all communications, pack the gifts, make the princess certificates, and hand-wash the laundry,” said Lindaman. On top of her various roles, Lindaman creates and sews all of her characters’ custom costumes. “Our costumes and wigs are very important to what I’ve curated here with Simply Ever After Entertainment,” stated Lindaman. “You won’t find a character in a costume from Amazon or a Halloween store.” She adds that each piece is meticulously chosen to aid in the character's representation, as their stories are important. Lindaman’s costuming goal is twofold—making something she’s proud of and making her performers comfortable and feel like royalty.

“My performers are incredible people,” expressed Lindaman. “If they don’t feel like the character in what they’re wearing, then I’m doing something wrong. Their confidence and comfort matters to me greatly.” For performers, Lindaman has recruited a lineup of local entertainers who share her mission of bringing joy to children. With their help, the company is continuing to flourish. “Our cast is made up of men and women who are teachers, occupational therapists, theater instructors, voice teachers, and all sorts of professions that cater to kids,” shared Lindaman. The group of actors are additionally trained by Lindaman, learning how to transform and embody the characters. The performers learn to master the character's mannerisms, voice, and appearance, ensuring that every interaction feels like stepping into the pages of a storybook. From intricate costumes and makeup, to engaging performances and interactive storytelling, no detail is overlooked in creating an immersive experience. “I can’t help but remember a party where we had a princess walk into a client’s home & the birthday girl screamed & ran to her room to grab a t-shirt that had our princess on it. She exclaimed how she looked the same, & so she had to be the real deal!” Lindaman’s lasting memory

Simply Ever After offers six party packages to choose from: Princess Parties , Superhero Parties , Galaxy Parties , Wizarding Parties , Super Plumber Parties , and Tea Parties . Each package includes the character's attendance, a storytime session, games, and character-specific activities and lessons. For a special treat, birthday kids will receive either a Coronation Ceremony or Superhero Training , teaching the children the ways of a princess or superhero. Lindaman shares that the child gets to keep their gifted certificate or crown, with parties that are an hour or longer. The Tea Party package is Simply Ever After’s largest package. “We bring the treats, lemonade, crafts, and teach etiquette lessons,” added Lindaman. “It’s a great package for parents who want to be a little more hands-off for the duration of the party.” During the team's attendance at the event, Lindaman notes that they have everything under control. “Parents won’t need to lift a finger,” she said.

Choosing Simply Ever After ensures parents will receive their child's favorite character and that they will be treated like royalty. “Our performers know kids and know how to adapt,” added Lindaman. “Kids and parents should expect the real deal walking through their door, and they should know that we’re there to have a great time with them.” For the past nine years, Lindaman has been creating lasting memories for her clients. And while she admits it’s hard work to keep up with all of her responsibilities, she says she wouldn’t trade it for the world. “There’s a moment when the door opens and the kids see their favorite character and they start screaming the character’s name with so much excitement—it’s so special,” said Lindaman. “You can’t help but smile when that happens.” In moments like this, Lindaman relies on a quote: “With great power comes great responsibility.” “I feel that responsibility every day with every request,” she shared. “I have a responsibility to bring joy, and the fact that I can bring that joy and that I even have this opportunity is the most rewarding thing I can think of. BHP Jr. Performing Arts Camp

Nestled amidst the beauty of the Black Hills lies a unique opportunity for young aspiring performers—the BHP Jr. Performing Arts Camp —an outreach of the Black Hills Playhouse . This vibrant camp, set against the backdrop of nature’s grandeur, offers a nurturing environment where children can unleash their creativity, hone their theatrical skills, and forge lasting friendships. “The camps started in 2016, and we wanted to give the kids in this region the opportunity to do a more intense study of theater while experiencing

The junior camp aims to foster creativity, build confidence, and ignite a lifelong passion for the performing arts. Throughout the week-long sleepaway camp, students will act, sing, dance, and rehearse this year's chosen musical, Frozen JR . “This camp will culminate into a performance,” said Jack Bledsoe , education program coordinator. “We go through an entire production process in the forest, which is a lot of fun.” The BHP Junior Camps cater to different age groups, providing age-appropriate instruction and performance opportunities.

The 5th-8th Grade Camp focuses on building fundamental theater skills and fostering a love for the stage. Campers can explore all aspects of performing arts in a supportive environment. These campers will be allowed to develop their acting, dancing, and singing skills through hands-on activities, rehearsals, and performances. The 8th-12th Grade Camp is designed for those looking to dive deeper into the theater world. These campers delve deeper into acting, singing, dancing, and technical theater. “For those not looking to be on stage, the technical theater track is perfect,” said Workman. Campers have the option to help with lights, sound, costume work, stage management, and things that are on the behind-the-scenes track. “We want to show these kids that every part is important, and show the joy of theater in different ways,” added Workman. “It presents a new set of opportunities.” The older campers will dig deeper into the creative process and go beyond the page.

“The camp is equipped with so many areas for small, medium, or large groups.”

Performances of the Past

Here are a few of the original & licensed works the BHP Jr. Performing Arts Camps have previously performed:

• The Broadway Junior Revue

• Footloose

• Oklahoma at Placerville • Rocking Robinhood

• Nifty Fifties Variety Showcase • Mystery of Crimson House

• Cinderella

• The Creepy Kooky Cabaret

• Zoomaway Camp

On-site classes and rehearsals encourage the actors to explore their range, pushing their boundaries and honing their talents. Campers will learn from experienced theater professionals who enthusiastically share their knowledge and expertise. These dedicated mentors help campers develop their skills, gain confidence, and discover new possibilities within themselves. Workman, Bledsoe, and their staff aim to keep a low-pressure environment, as theater can be daunting for those who have never experienced being on stage. “We’re meeting kids where they’re at with their skill sets,” explained Bledsoe. “We have beginner performers to advanced performers, so we try to cater the camp to make everyone feel comfortable.” Each camp begins with ice-breakers, getting- to-know-you activities, and learning the show material before auditions. “We try to allow the campers to get to know us before we dive into auditions because they can be intimidating, especially if it’s their first time,” shared Bledsoe. After the cast list is announced, the campers hit the ground running. When they’re not rehearsing, campers and counselors take advantage of the nature surrounding them.

“We close off an ample amount of time to explore, take guided hikes, and do camp- like activities,” said Bledsoe. He added, “It’s cool to see the mixture of their time where they get to choose what they do, and the time they’re in rehearsals to see the different ways they express themselves creatively.” For the junior camp, the emphasis is not just on theatrical performances, but also on holistic development. “When campers arrive, they turn in their phones, allowing us all to connect by talking and looking at each other,” said Workman. “When you add that unplugging and connection, the creativity is amazing.” The Black Hills Playhouse is also deeply committed to creating a safe and welcoming space for all campers. Their emphasis on inclusion ensures every child feels valued, respected, and encouraged to express themselves freely on and off stage. “From the moment they enter camp, we let kids know that it’s a safe environment and we accept them, no matter what,” expressed Workman. “We also show them what that looks like from each other and when you provide that safety of, ‘You can be you, and that’s awesome.’”

“All of our programs feed into what we do at the Black Hills Playhouse.”

Deb Workman

“With the balance of camp and the arts there are so many creative outlets and choices for the kids, and we honor those choices,” added Bledsoe. “By not having phones, nothing is going to be documented—in the best way,” explained Workman. “If they mess up or try new things, it’s not going to be in a picture or video that can be released.” Beyond the thrill of performing on stage, the junior camp provides a supportive community where lifelong friendships are forged. Campers collaborate, support, and inspire one another, creating bonds that endure far beyond the duration of camp. Workman notes many alumni have fondly recalled memories and friendships they formed at camp, cherishing them as treasures of their childhood. “It blows me away what’s coming out of this camp,” said Workman. Each camp session culminates in an exciting final performance, where campers work together to bring a beloved production to life and showcase their hard work and growth. “It’s always a blast,” said Bledsoe. Written by Gabby Sudenga + photos by Cailyn Patterson Pinz

Along Main Street in Dell Rapids stands Pinz —a local bowling alley offering a fun-filled experience for families and friends.

Established in 1960, Pinz entered a new chapter in September 2022 under the ownership of Casey McCoy .

McCoy never expected to own a bowling alley, though.

“The mother of the previous owners approached me and asked if I was interested in taking over,” shared McCoy. “I had seen they had it on sale on Facebook, but didn’t put too much thought into it, as I wasn’t at a stage in my life where I could jump back into this type of thing.”

Previously, McCoy—a trained chef—had been a part of 15 grand openings, serving as the general manager or executive chef.

“This would be the first time I would be the owner,” he recalled.

After that visit, McCoy pondered the offer more, and then two- and-a-half weeks later he signed the purchase agreement.

McCoy has a mission to enhance the bowling experience, while staying true to Pinz’s classic charm.

“I want to keep it as a place for kids—that’s important to me,” stated McCoy. “Overall, the energy of the kids and the guests who continue to come in revitalizes us.”

On a sunny Wednesday afternoon, Cailyn Patterson , lead multimedia designer and photographer, Greta Smith , sales and account manager, and I made the drive to visit the Pinz family. Upon entering the small town bowling alley, the 605 team was greeted with a heartwarming, handwritten sign stating, “Pinz Welcomes 605 Magazine .” From that moment on, the girls and I knew it was going to be a memorable visit. McCoy greeted us with eagerness—ready to share his story and what Pinz is known for. “We’re not a traditional bowling alley,” shared McCoy. “We’re trying to reinvent the image of what a bowling alley can be.” Pinz boasts eight original wood lanes that are meticulously maintained by the staff. McCoy shares that they proudly stand as one of few establishments in the area to preserve the timeless tradition. But Pinz isn’t stuck in the past. The new ownership has expanded the business to be paired with an arcade, axe throwing, pinball, and casino dubbed Lottery Lane . While I was conducting my interview with McCoy, Patterson and Smith headed downstairs to get their game on—specifically in pinball. McCoy says one thing that truly sets Pinz apart from other bowling alleys is its commitment to a new culinary experience. The food menu focuses on going beyond typical bowling alley dishes with fresh and local ingredients. “We make so many of our offerings in-house,” shared McCoy. “We want to take care of you like family.” Casey McCoy

McCoy presented us with a spread of his most popular dishes: Bacon Jalapeño Wontons , the Gutter Ball Sandwich , Smothered Chicken , Sweet Potato Fries with a signature toasted marshmallow dip, and Bread Pudding . As we dove into the dishes, we quickly discovered the sweet potato fries and bread pudding were our favorites. McCoy also shared a culinary secret with the team that he uses in the crowd favorite, Gutter Balls —otherwise known as meatballs. Instead of making meatballs with breadcrumbs, the chef uses unsweetened pancake mix. “Other popular menu items are our Chislic Brooklyn Basket , Five Bagger Fire Burger , our salad bar, and our buffets,” shared McCoy. As for ingredients, Pinz uses an abundance of locally-sourced ingredients. “All of our meat is cut from the county fair, and during the summer we get all of our vegetables from the farmers’ market,” said McCoy. “With us making things in-house, it’s easier to incorporate local ingredients.” To make sure they’re using the best products at their peak times, McCoy changes the variation of his menus. “The menu can get boring after a while,” he said with a laugh. “This is our fourth variation in a year and a half, because I want to keep it fresh.”

As a creative nod to its name, sections of Pinz's menu are labeled with bowling terms like First Frame , Main Frame , & Perfect Game . Did You Know?
