PAUSE TO PROGRESS The Importance of Slowing Your Roll
“Whether you’re with your spouse or a client, maintaining a successful relationship often comes down to three words: slow your roll. ”
It’s crazy to think that February is already here! I hope this message finds you well and that you’re having a fantastic start to 2025. Of course, Valentine’s Day is on Feb. 14, which has me thinking a lot about how much our professional relationships have in common with our personal ones. Whether you’re with your spouse or a client, maintaining a successful relationship often comes down to three words: slow your roll .
Years ago, I read a story called “Acres of Diamonds” that helped shape my outlook on business and life. It is the tale of a farmer in Africa who hurriedly sold his business and hit the road after hearing that other farmers were finding wealth mining for gold in other parts of the continent. Well, he ended up not finding any gold and dying with nothing. Meanwhile, the man who had purchased his farm kept noticing sparkly objects in the river on the property. Curiosity got the best of him … and he discovered that the river was full of diamonds. By leaving his farm to chase something he thought was more significant than what he had, the first farmer failed to see what was right in front of him all along. I had a similar experience with the love of my life. I had known my wife since we both attended the same church as children, but I admit that I didn’t really notice her back then. As I grew up, I started traveling a lot for work and spent less time at church and the area I was raised in. In whatever ways He works, God brought me back to her many years later. My best friend and greatest blessing had been in my life all along — I just had to take the time to notice.
“Slow your roll” is an expression that encourages you to slow down, relax, and appreciate the good things in life. It’s not always easy — especially when so much of our daily lives are devoted to working, paying bills, raising children, and so many other things — but it’s an important goal we should all try to reach as often as we can. Slowing down improves our state of mind and helps us be the best business owners, parents, partners, and friends possible. Anyone in business will benefit from taking the time to slow their roll, teach themselves new things, and focus on becoming better at giving. I started working for myself when I was 19 and didn’t get married until I was almost 29. In the nearly 10 years between those life-changing events, I worked hard at building my company, but I also focused on working on myself to be a better person and draw myself closer to God. I’m thrilled with everything I’ve achieved in my business, but I remain humble and have never lost sight of the fact that I’m only successful because of the people who trust me and give me those opportunities to grow. Businesspeople can become very arrogant when they find power and success, but staying honest and humble is important. They need to recognize that they’re not going to be perfect all the time and that they definitely don’t know it all. Likewise, showing humility, saying you’re sorry, and asking for forgiveness are all crucial actions that will help keep a romantic relationship on the right track.
No matter how busy you get — and how many ups and downs you experience on the road to success — always take the time to appreciate everything you have in the moment. You may discover you already have all the joys and riches you’ll ever need.

Hi, it’s Ella! I hope you loved reading about my brother and sister in the past couple of newsletters. Now it’s my turn to update everyone on what I’ve been up to! My sister, Juliet, loves jumping around and exploring the outdoors, and my brother, Gavin, is always helping folks in our community. Me? I love to spend time reading and learning! I read a lot at school, but I enjoy doing it in my free time, too. In fact, there’s rarely a time when I don’t have a book in my hands! I read even when riding in the car to church — or anywhere, really — with my family. Even when Mommy or Daddy shut off the light in the bedroom I share with Juliet, I still read with a book light. I know I should probably go to sleep when the bedroom light is shut off, but it’s hard to put down a good book once I’ve started turning the pages. “Wings of Fire,” “Geronimo Stilton,” and “The Baby-Sitters Club” are my favorite book series these days. They’re pretty popular with 9-year-olds like me, and I recommend them to anyone in my age group who hasn’t read them yet. When I’m not reading fun fiction, I’m busy learning about things in the real world! I like challenging myself and being a well-rounded student and person. I love language and science — and getting to know more about the world around me and how to communicate with it. Some kids don’t like school very much, but I really enjoy it. Away from school and my books, I’m having great times with my horse, Fairytale, and rollerblading as much as possible! My hobbies excite me and bring me joy, and I hope you have ones that do the same for you. And if you have any recommendations for age-appropriate books I’d enjoy, please let my Daddy know! a custom fire pit, water feature, pergola, beautifully landscaped seating areas, or other features. Appreciate the Wonders of Eternal Flame Falls
A GLIMPSE INTO A MYSTERY OF NATURE EARTH’S ETERNAL FLAME
Visitors to Eternal Flame Falls, a unique, naturally occurring gas flame emanating from the ground near Orchard Park, New York, often describe it with feelings of awe. A natural gas leak from deep in the ground fuels the Eternal Flame, and a waterfall tumbles down from a rock face between hikers and the flame, creating a grotto-like effect that draws scores of visitors year-round. Natural gas emissions from the Earth aren’t uncommon; however, the flame that gives Eternal Flame Falls its name is unique in several ways. According to a team of Italian and American geologists who investigated the leak in 2013, the gas is released at a relatively shallow depth of about 1,300 feet underground. The lukewarm shale surrounding its origins is much cooler than the 100-degree Celsius temperatures at the origin point of most naturally occurring flames.
Natural gas leaks are usually composed of methane, but the gas fueling New York’s Eternal Flame is a unique blend of 35% ethane and propane in addition to methane. The research team also noted a series of other small gas seeps within the shale layer where the Eternal Flame flare originates. One geologist on the team theorized that the gas might have been produced within the shale by a different process that scientists have not yet identified. In addition to gas combustion, natural eternal flames can be created by peat fires or coal seam fires, ignited by lightning, human activity, or electricity caused by tectonic stress. Humans often create and maintain eternal flames, too, to commemorate people or events. In the U.S., manmade eternal flames burn at Ground Zero, the site of the 2001 terrorist attacks, and the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
The hike to view New York’s Eternal Flame Falls is a 40-minute round trip. However, the flame is difficult to access in wet seasons when the river swells to a torrent, so check the weather beforehand.
