Make Your Coffee Addiction Work for You

3 WAYS COFFEE BOOSTS MY PRODUCTIVITY AND SUCCESS

“My name is Darin Garman, and I’m a coffee addict.” If Coffee Addicts Anonymous existed, that’s how I’d introduce myself to the folks in the group. I’m sure I’d end up at a CAA meeting eventually. All you have to do is take one look around my house, and you’ll realize pretty quickly I have a coffee habit. Most people keep their coffee paraphernalia in the kitchen. (I’m talking the beans, the grinders, the machines, and all of the other doodads). But my coffee gear has its own special room. The three-shelf coffee bar in there is STACKED with all things coffee. SHELF NO. 1: THE COFFEE MAKERS. I like variety in my life, so I have six coffee makers I rotate through. Right now, I’m hooked on the plain-old Ninja drip coffee maker, but when I get tired of it, I have my French press, my Nespresso machine, my espresso machine, my pour-over setup, and my Keurig to fall back on. SHELF NO. 2: THE COFFEE BEANS. I like to experiment with different beans and test things out. You might find the really good stuff from my favorite local Verena Street Coffee on this shelf or a random container of coffee from Sam’s Club. (You can read more about Verena Street Coffee on Page 3.) SHELF NO. 3: THE COFFEE GOODIES. This is where I keep my coffee add-ins and experiments, like my different flavored syrups, my medium-

chain triglyceride oil (more on that in a minute), and any other coffee-related products I come across. Right now, I’m testing coffee packets you float in hot water like tea bags.

joe. You’ll make surprising discoveries and might unlock inspiration for other areas of your life in the process. Have a strategy. Don’t think about caffeine as a bad thing you really should stay away from but can’t. Instead, think of it as a GOOD thing — when used strategically.

At this point, I think I’ve pretty much mastered caffeine. I first got hooked on the stuff when I

got into the real estate business and needed to stay awake and motivated through the night. It still keeps me going today! But now, I make my coffee work for me. 3 COFFEE TIPS FOR PRODUCTIVITY AND SUCCESS 1.

My morning cup of coffee literally

excites me to get up in the morning. You can use your coffee breaks as lightning bolts to charge you up throughout the day and keep your productivity high. By now, you might be thinking, “Darin, why the heck are you writing about coffee in

Don’t think about caffeine as a bad thing you should stay away from but can’t. Instead, think of it as a GOOD thing — when used strategically.

Add good calories. It’s not a great idea to drink ONLY black

coffee for breakfast, but you also shouldn’t load it up with cream and sugar. That will promote weight gain and slow you down. Instead, throw some butter or medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil in your cup. Those fats will fill you up and power you through a productive morning without a bunch of sugar. Get creative. In business, we’re always running tests and trying new things. It keeps our minds sharp, and it’s fun! I recommend doing this with your coffee, too. When I found out, I figured we might as well celebrate being hooked. If you made it this far, I’ll see you at the next CAA meeting! –Darin Garman

GET STARTED NOW! It’s Never Too Late to Plan Your Retirement

The way people retire nowadays is a bit different than what it used to be. On the surface, retirement planning has not changed too much — you work, you save, and then you retire. While the mechanics may be the same, retirement planning now comes with a whole new set of complex factors.

idea of when (or if) you want to retire, and still have time to make adjustments, if needed, or even boost your savings before you retire.

It can be overwhelming for some, but if you focus on what you can control and develop a comprehensive plan, you can be just as successful.

KICKSTARTING YOUR PLAN While starting to save early is a great idea, it is okay to set money aside for more immediate needs and focus on saving when you’re older. Some things to keep in mind when starting your plan include the following:

You will need to think about how much

everything will cost, and though we don’t know what prices will be like in the future, it’s important to plan for higher prices in the years ahead. This can include the following: • Housing costs — rent, mortgage, heating, water, and maintenance • Health care costs • Day-to-day living expenses — food, clothing, transportation • Entertainment — restaurants, movies, plays, and personal hobbies. There are few things that are more nerve-wracking than the thought of outliving your resources, and if your retirement savings are not managed properly, it can be inadequate for your needs. But this is fully within your control, and you can decide what is best for you for a successful retirement.

Create a budget.

• Set automatic transfers between checking and retirement accounts. • Create an emergency account that allows you to cover any unexpected expenses, such as a broken water heater, without throwing your retirement plans out the window. • Pay down debt so you can be debt-free in your non-earning years. SAVING FOR RETIREMENT Whether you plan to retire early, late, or never, having an adequate amount of savings can make all the difference. The last decade or so before you plan to reach retirement can be especially crucial. By then, you may have a good

YOUTUBE TEACHES ME AN INVESTMENT LESSON Darin Garman, ‘Banned in All Countries’!

The other day, I got a strange email in my inbox. The subject line said, “You have been banned in all countries.” This was NOT junk mail or spam. It was a legitimate email from YouTube telling me that one of my videos had been “blocked and banned from being viewed in all countries.”

The thing is that this isn’t an isolated YouTube incident. If you have ANY INVESTMENTS accessible online, you can lose access at any time — just like I lost my video. You have no control. Someone can pull the plug on the website (or even pull the plug on you!) without warning. That’s why it REALLY PAYS TO KNOW THE PEOPLE WHO RUN THE SHOW. If you don’t have access to the team behind your investments, you’re setting yourself up for trouble and possible disaster. It’s not a matter of if it will happen but when . This is why so many investors choose to team up with my team and invest in apartments in the Heartland. If there’s ever a problem, they can talk to a real person who cares and understands, not some chatbot or receptionist No. 5,000 at a big company. You always have access to my team. In good times, in bad times, and whenever needed. That is just the way we do things here in the Heartland. So, be careful out there … especially on YouTube! You could be doing great one day and “yanked” the next. –Darin

As you probably know, I like posting personal and professional videos. This particular video I posted over Christmas was about the Garman Family Bench Press Tournament. Each Christmas, our family has some kind of competition. We’ve done flag football, races, and exercise contests. That particular year’s contest focused on who could bench press the most — and during the competition, I had music playing in the background. Look, you have to have music when you’re having a weightlifting contest, don’t you? Evidently, the band AC/DC’s legal beagles took offense. Their music is copyright protected, so YouTube took my video down. No warning, not even a “sorry about this, but we have to do it.” Just an email saying I’m suddenly “banned in all countries.”

SOLUTION

When Darin is feeling fancy, he’ll grind up some beans from the best coffee roaster in Iowa for his morning cup of joe. That roaster is Verena Street Coffee — a local company based in Dubuque that cooks truly remarkable coffee beans. Verena Street was created by cousins Eric and Michael Gantz. They named their coffee brand after the street in rural Iowa where they grew up. According to the company’s website, the entire Gantz family lived on the same road, including aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. The story of what happened to that road is as heartbreaking as their coffee is delicious. “In the early 2000s, Verena Street was removed for highway expansion. Erased by the progress of modern development, ‘Verena Street’ survives only in our memories. Today, countless cars pass over the spot where we once played on the swing set our grandfather built,” the cousins wrote on their website. “Today, Verena Street lives on as the namesake of our craft roasted coffee. Although we can no longer walk down Verena Street, it is a place we can once again call home.” The coffee Verena Street sells really does taste like home. They specialize in high-quality, medium-roast blends that aren’t too bitter or fruity. Some of our favorites are the Mississippi Grogg (which the cousins describe as “a warm and inviting blend of butterscotch, caramel, and hazelnut”) and the Cow Tipper (a “rich and creamy blend of vanilla, caramel, and coffee liqueur flavoring”). To make one of Darin’s favorite drinks — two shots of espresso in a black coffee — you could use the Shot Tower Espresso Blend. It’s a dark-roast blend that’s “smooth yet full” with “a rich body” and “a sweet and creamy complexity.” Verena Street also has decaf options for most of their whole or preground beans. You don’t have to go to Italy or Seattle to get great coffee. If you love a quality cup, check out all of the beans Verena Street Coffee has to offer at VerenaStreet.com. They ship to every state in the lower 48!

Going Beyond the Status Quo

5 WAYS TO STAND OUT AT WORK

Today, the work place is riddled with employees just muddling through their day. We all know these people — they never miss an opportunity to let you know how much they don’t want to be there. So, when it comes to your boss’s impression of you, the last thing you want is to be lumped in with the others. Here are five foolproof ways to get noticed (in a good way) at work! FIND A BALANCE BETWEEN LEADER AND LEARNER. When you’re new to a career or project, observing, listening, and note taking are crucial ways to adapt and learn how things work. Once you’ve got your footing, taking on a leadership position is key, but it’s important to make sure you don’t come off too strong too early either! It’s all about finding that balance and remembering that you never stop learning. SPEAK UP DURING MEETINGS. During team and company meetings, be sure to contribute whenever possible. Management is

listening and watching, and you don’t want to be noticed for sitting silently. Your silence could suggest disengagement. If you want to move up in the rankings, find your voice and contribute! GO ABOVE AND BEYOND THE JOB DESCRIPTION. In many cases, to reach the highest potential of your job position, you need to be willing to

do a little more than the job description requires. Even though a supervisor may ask you to do a little more, taking the initiative to ensure your job is done well gets you noticed — even if that means doing something requiring extra effort! OFFER TO HELP OTHERS. Sure, work is busy and helping others makes it that much busier! But being a known “go-to” person around the office is a great thing — you add value! Not only will management not want to

lose you, but they will keep their eye on you for advancement, too!

COMPLETE TASKS WITHOUT BEING ASKED. If you notice something needs to be done, do it before you’re asked! Even if it’s just cleaning up the breakroom or taking out the trash, being proactive is sure to pay off! Those who go the extra mile always make a name for themselves.
