ENERGIZE ! EXPLORING INNOVATIVE RURAL COMMUNITIES CONFERENCE 605 tries photos by john snyder written by maddilynn kallsen

Energize! Exploring Innovative Rural Communities Conference was inspired by a similar conference in Nebraska— Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities Conference —both aiming to empower small communities with ideas to uplift their towns. “We enjoyed the opportunity to immerse ourselves in a rural community throughout the conference, and we left feeling so energized and renewed,” said Peggy Schlechter , South Dakota State University ( SDSU ) extension community vitality program director. “On the trip home we said we needed to have a conference in

that format in South Dakota, and the idea for Energize! was born.”

Kara Harders , SDSU extension community vitality field specialist, explained how the conference empowers small communities to unite and solve issues with solutions proven to work. “The purpose is idea sharing, networking, and to be energized,” said Harders. “Every small town or smaller community has its own flavor, and they all have their own unique issues, challenges, abilities, and advantages.”

Anyone in the community is welcome to partake in the conference. Discounted tickets are available to the youth. “We want everybody interested in their small community to come. If there are young people in the community who want to come, if they think being in local government is going to be for them, or want to hear about what's going on in other small towns, they are welcome and encouraged to come,” said Harders. Keynote speakers are chosen to educate attendees on various topics beneficial to communal problem solving and ways to improve their way of life. “The overall goal is to have people leave with tangible, actionable things to change,” explained Harders. “You want them to leave feeling better about your community and their position in the community.” The conference takes place for two full days with various breakout sessions led by multiple speakers covering different applicable topics. Along with evening activities, there are many opportunities to network with other individuals in the community, Harders explains. Last year’s event was May 22 and 23 in Hot Springs. “ There ' s joys and challenges living in a small town . The more people you know , the more people to build community with , the stronger it makes us all . Hopefully it ' s a lot of community

building people walk away with .” kara harders

“The idea is the people who come and listen to presentations will try to do that exact same thing,” she said. “It's if they hear enough things and they talk to enough people, you can start to build this nebulous success model.” Breakout sessions last year covered a wide range of ways to engage and benefit small communities, including how to write successful grants, coaching and leading in a small town, marketing to

your community, using the arts to build community, creating art councils, and much more. Around 16 local businesses participated to host the breakout sessions. “The speakers, whether they are the keynote or breakout sessions, are experts on their rural communities,” said Schlechter. “They are people who live, work, and volunteer in the communities, and are able to share their stories.”

The conference focuses on perspectives from small towns, aiding in relatability and relevance to the communities they’re speaking to, Harders adds. “Last year our keynote speaker was Michael Perry , who wrote Population: 485 . It was about how he moved back to his small community. As a writer, he had free time, so he joined the local fire department, volunteered, and did things to give back to the community,” said Harders.

Other past speakers include mayor of Fort Pierre Gloria Hanson , Parkston youth sports coach Bill Maxwell , Kimball business owner Corinne Overweg , Centerville community economic development coordinator Jared Hybertson , mayor of Wessington Springs Brian Bergeleen , and many more. “In terms of opportunity, the whole is more than the sum of its parts,” said Harders. “Even if somebody were to come to Energize! and they only learned and implemented one thing applicable, it's going to be worth spending two days to learn when you look at the number of people who benefit over time.” Connecting communities together in productive ways through idea sharing helps equip individuals with the necessary skills to not only solve issues, but to implement positive change, Harders emphasizes. “There is tons of really good networking that goes on because you're in the vicinity of a whole bunch of people who are all in the same bucket of work or interest, even if you don't work directly in your community in one of those official positions,” said Harders.

Harders' goals for the Energize! Conference include providing a diverse topic set with quality keynote speakers, where people participating leave feeling fulfilled and ready to implement new ways to improve their community. “I hope Energize! continues to connect, inspire, and energize those who work so hard to make their rural communities the best they can be,” said Schlechter. “I also hope rural communities hosting Energize! see they can be a destination for a conference or other event and use what they learn by hosting Energize! to seek those opportunities.” Save the date for the seventh annual Energize! THE STEEL DISTRICT a premier destination

Experience views of Sioux Falls and Falls Park that haven’t been seen in more than 100 years. The Steel District —a Lloyd Companies development—started demolition in 2021, and in 2024 unveiled the new neighborhood blending a variety of upscale dining, unique retail, a high- end hotel, and contemporary living spaces. “The vision began years ago when Craig Lloyd and Steve Metli would meet to walk around Falls Park and pick up trash,” said Jennifer Seifert-Brenna , VP of hospitality at Lloyd Hospitality Group . This vision, Seifert-Brenna says, was reimagining the property where “modern sophistication meets the city’s rich heritage along the Big Sioux River.” One of the first phases was the office tower, including the Lloyd Companies headquarters. This offers one of a handful of dining options, Brioux Falls , with a grab-and-go food menu and gourmet coffee for professionals, visitors, and residents. Along with a variety of options for meeting spaces, Seifert-Brenna says other perks include the parking ramp (with 900+ spots), a fitness center, a glass skywalk, and other amenities. “The skywalk is a welcome treat in the cold months or on a rainy day, and the multiple restaurant and bar choices are great for small meetings or lunches with clients,” she said.

Other unique dining experiences on the property include Big Sioux Burger , Dahlia Kitchen + Bar , Ironwood Steakhouse , Torrent , and Cascata Italian Cuisine . The last two are located right inside of Canopy by Hilton Sioux Falls Downtown . Hristiyana Ralinova , general manager and chief enthusiast at Canopy by Hilton Sioux Falls Downtown, explains each Canopy by

Hilton brand works hard to incorporate the locale into each property. As this location was built on land previously owned by Sioux Steel, a number of details nod to that, like yellow barrel drums used as nightstands and barn doors made by Sioux Steel at their plant in Lennox. Celebrating local art is also important to

Canopy properties, and some highlights include a lobby mural by local artist Holly Young . Her commissioned pieces are also in the guest rooms, layered on framed original ledgers from Sioux Steel. “This has been an incredible opportunity to be a part of something new, exciting, and vibrant; something that will make a mark in the history of Sioux Falls and downtown,” said Ralinova.

Another important mission to Canopy is bringing nature in with plants. “Canopy brand creates a unique vibe, and biophilia is a big part of it,” said Ralinova. There is so much plantlife that the hotel has partnered with a local florist to maintain it. “The Canopy has so many large windows that capture the exterior views, and bringing plants inside just adds to the beauty,” said Seifert-Brenna. Near the lobby’s large wall of plants is a more secluded area called The Retreat . “The Retreat started as a quiet space to get away from the hustle of the lobby,” recalled Seifert-Brenna. “We added a central fireplace and a lot of soft seating. Over time, we identified it would be a wonderful pre-function space to the adjacent junior ballroom and wanted to add an element of entertainment and activity.” [Craig] Lloyd surprised the hotel with a baby grand piano for even more ambiance in The Retreat. “We are thrilled the piano can play on its own or a guest can go up to it and sit down to play,” said Seifert-Brenna.

Canopy by Hilton Sioux Falls Downtown has 20,000 square feet of flexible event space with statement light fixtures and state-of-the-art technology. The rooms are designed for anything from conference and business meetings to weddings hosting up to 500 guests. They also have 12 individual meeting rooms, some of which can be combined. “A fun fact is that the names we selected for all of [the rooms] are related to the history of Sioux Falls,” said Ralinova.

For those staying longer, attached to the Canopy Hilton Sioux Falls Downtown are The District Lofts and The Steel District Condos . “The District Lofts offer studios and one and two bedroom apartments in the best location downtown,” said property manager for The District Lofts Megan Pederson . Options for condos include the top floor single-story condos or the ground floor two-story condos. The latter has direct

views of the riverfront and greenway with easy access to nature. “[Guests and residents] can jump on the bike trail or walk downtown or to Falls Park,” said Ralinova. “Being adjacent to Jacobson Plaza provides options for our guests and visitors to visit the all-inclusive play park, splash pad, ice skating ribbon, or take their dog to the dog park.” The Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation aims to open the Jacobson Plaza this year.

Another outdoor amenity for guests and residents is Lloyd Landing , which sits along Falls Park. The gifted plaza by Lloyd Companies will be a multipurpose synthetic turf lawn that will accommodate a dog park, outdoor seating and activities, food trucks, public art, live music, and more. Local shopping is also available at The Steel District with Pasque Boutique and the Washington Pavilion’s Alcove —a curated shop with rotating eclectic inventory and art exhibits. While The Steel District is open and buzzing, the warmer months will also allow for many more guests with a plethora of outdoor patios. Many of the development’s views also include the Levitt at The Falls amphitheater, giving the ability to view an entire show without having to leave the property. This all could not have happened without the people behind the project, says Ralinova. “Hundreds of people have been involved in this development, and all of them had such an impact on what we now have at The Steel District,” she said. “It is something you put all your heart, time, and dedication into and you see it coming to life. So rewarding!” FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT THESTEELDISTRICT. COM+

Stay, Eat, & Play Tin Lizzie

Tin Lizzie Gaming Resort in Deadwood has come a long way since its purchase in 2001.

and the Hampton Inn next door, making the combined campus almost the entire bottom third of Main Street. “Tin Lizzie, when it previously existed, was a slot house with a couple tables and a restaurant, and we knew the future included rooms for those guests,” said Pritchett. The Hampton Inn Deadwood at Tin Lizzie Gaming Resort wrapped up its second large renovation this past December just in time for New Year’s Eve.

“ Blue Sky Gaming bought Tin Lizzie in December of 2001, and then 2002 is when it kind of kicked off. That's when there was the coup d'etat,” said Tin Lizzie general manager Brent Pritchett . The "coup d’etat" was a new vision and countless renovations over the next two decades. This also coincided with the purchase of the former Four Aces Casino

“The old Tin Lizzie and old Four Aces Casino is now a completely new resort with a new vibe and a new energy.” Brent Pritchett

“[The latest renovation] completely redesigned our lobby, every single room — both suites and all of the ancillary elements of the property,” said Pritchett. The company added more rooms by building the modern Four Points by Sheraton from the ground up, and this was what the resort team says was a big inspiration of continuing

growth and development to the brand.

The new hotel opened up the opportunity for more parking, which is available surrounding Main Street. “We probably have more parking on Main Street than anyone,” said Pritchett.

Can you Dig It?

During construction, the Tin Lizzie team had to do an archaeological dig where they found items like an eight foot section of a sluice box. Visitors can find a detailed list of artifacts at the Adams Museum via the Deadwood Historic Preservation records.

This also gave Tin Lizzie a leg up, he says, to treat first-time and loyal guests. “Having quality rooms is important to us because we have a lot of high rollers, and we want to be able to give them a really nice experience,” said Pritchett. During the completion of Four Points is also when Tin Lizzie became part of the Liv Hospitality umbrella. To follow suit with updates and forward thinking, the team says they thought about current and future patrons when evaluating the state of the full service casino. “We had to open up that pipeline to make sure we had new players we were introducing to our product, and that was part of the impetus behind actually getting the entire casino floor renovated and becoming a little more modern,” said Pritchett. This was done by making it “more attractive” by changing the music, smells, and environment to appeal to a wider demographic. “There's a lot of different options for different types of gamblers within the casino, from slot machines and video poker to live action table games,” said Pritchett.

“Some tourists don't really have a great idea right away how to experience a new town. Having an all inclusive or a full service resort experience allows them to get their bearings and have a home base.” Brent Pritchett

Tin Lizzie also has one of the largest sportsbooks in Deadwood. The BETMGM Sportsbook at Tin Lizzie has features like lounge chair seating, nearly 40 video displays, a 40-foot long video wall, and three self-service betting kiosks. “We have 24 hour betting kiosks for sports betting, which means the betting window doesn't have to be open for you to come into Tin Lizzie and make a sports bet,” said Pritchett. The BETMGM has a personalized sound system with the option to link the sound from the games to the guest’s personal device through Bluetooth headphones, so viewers can tune out all of the ambient noise. It also isn’t uncommon to see a service robot cruising through the casino. “Our robot is out there, which is really cutting edge,” said Pritchett. “Being new to Deadwood, guests get the authentic, historical feel of the campus, but then they walk inside and it's juxtaposing to a futuristic feel.”

To keep on trend, the team says they noticed a rise in the food court concept with multiple dining options in casinos. This led to a renovation that included Pizza Hut Express and the newly-added Jersey Mike’s Subs . These rounded out the marketplace, which already had Starbucks . “These worldwide brands bring recognition and elevate the experience,” said Pritchett. Keeping that growing appeal to different demographics, Tin Lizzie also added self-ordering kiosks as an amenity. Pritchett explained, “It's just becoming more of what the next generation expects.” This area also includes Market on Main , which is the only mercantile store on the lower half of Main Street. The Market offers everything from snacks to beverages to basic necessities, to off-sale beer, liquor, and wine selections, and local South Dakota goods. “A lot of people come to Deadwood for the South Dakota experience, and we decided to stock South Dakota-made products to give people local eats like beef jerky or treats, or even honey made right here in our state to bring home,” said Pritchett.

Speaking of food, the Tin Lizzie campus also offers a wide range of dining. Local beers and breakfast, lunch, or dinner are available at Best Brews . For an Irish pub feel, guests can stop by Paddy O’Neill’s Irish Pub & Grill . And lastly, guests can grab a reservation or try a walk-in at the more formal option, Snitches . The latter is a casual, fine-dining restaurant with speakeasy vibes Pritchett says combines a quality steak experience with upscale seafood plating options. New Snitches executive chef John Lee cycles through seasonal seafood options based on ingredient availability. “It's not the kind of restaurant you can go into every night and expect exactly the same thing,” said Pritchett. “The menu is being curated by a culinary-trained chef, and we're getting great results from that.”

“I don't know how many times you would hear a family come in and say, ‘Well, I want this, but my kids don't want that.’ Now there's something for everybody.” Brent Pritchett on dining options

The head server, Toby Hurd , is also a sommelier, which adds to the wine pairing experience. “The whole idea behind Snitches was for guests to not pick ‘another steak house’ in Deadwood,” described Pritchett. “There's a lot of great places to buy a piece of meat, but if you want to have a nice night out, you want to experience a taste you never had before.” Giving guests that full circle Deadwood experience is what Tin Lizzie aims for. “Guests have a place to stay, they have a place to eat, and they have a place to play,” said Pritchett. He continued, “I think the future of Tin Lizzie is we've established a baseline, and it's going to be something superior to anything anybody's seen in Deadwood based on our commitment to innovation. I think that's what's going to take us to the next level.” FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT TINLIZZIE.COM+

605 STOPS BY Travis Electric

With the help of a neighbor contractor, Travis Electric was started out of Travis and Wendy Kuehl’s garage in Hartford in May 2005. “As a young family man, we had three kids, and my neighbor was a general contractor. I worked for a larger company in town. My town, and my neighbor would consistently tell me about opportunities had for me and different projects he needed an electrician on." From Hartford, Travis Electric grew into Sioux Falls with projects ranging from across the state of South Dakota to Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska. “We didn't have any grand illusions of being a big electrical contractor or having a lot of employees,” remembered Travis. “I had a very simple growth plan of adding one employee a year, and we've exceeded that here over the last few years. We're up to 30 employees.”

EXPERIENCED ELECTRICIAN

Travis has over 25 years of experience, beginning as a licensed electrician in 1994, and founding Travis Electric, Inc. in 2005.

Now based in Sioux Falls, Travis Electric covers a wide range of area, serving many communities in multiple states. “Hartford was a great place to start our business, and Sioux Falls and the surrounding area have been a great place to grow it,” said Travis. “We've done projects as far west as Custer, as far east as Decorah, Iowa to Minneapolis. When

you see the GPS where all the vans are located over the course of the day, it covers a pretty big area.” From the start, Travis Electric has been motivated by family, supported by an encouraging team of staff, Travis says. “As a whole, we try to hire employees who are respectful of our customers and

genuinely care about the product they put out there,” he said. “They tend to be family oriented, much like Wendy and I are towards our business and with our own family.” With multiple cross-trained and certified employees, Travis Electric works with fiber optics, data cable installation, and low voltage network connections.

Along with investing in the growth of his own business and the knowledge of his employees, Travis says he gives back to the community in whatever ways he can. “We try to advertise locally—support our local chamber, support our local churches and other nonprofits like youth sports programs,” he explained. “I really appreciate the community and support.” Wendy started working in the family business starting in 2021 after working at Sanford Health for 20 years. As projects coordinator, she has been creating initiatives to prioritize the newest technology, ensuring efficiency for customers.

“We've introduced a lot of new technologies over the past three years,” she said. “It’s been inspiring seeing the impact we’ve had, because we've done a lot of projects in the community.” Both Travis and Wendy commented on their priority to keep an authentic sense of identity while growing the company, ensuring genuine solutions to the community they serve. “Our main goals for the present are to maintain who we are and our identity as we grow and keep that connection with our customers,” said Travis. “I still try to be very forward-facing with our customers.”

“I TRY TO GET OUT AND STILL MAINTAIN THE FRONT, FACE TO FACE EXPERIENCES WITH OUR CUSTOMERS, BECAUSE I REALLY VALUE THEIR BUSINESS AND THAT RELATIONSHIP. WE'RE IN A VERY RELATIONSHIP BASED BUSINESS. IT CAN'T ALWAYS JUST BE ABOUT THE BOTTOM DOLLAR.”
