the importance of training and upskilling staff to enhance the value of the business. However, the company found navigating CITB grants and funding to be challenging and time consuming. The primary struggle T H Developments faced was the complexity and prescriptive nature of the CITB grant and funding schemes to access the training it needed. Despite the potential benefits, the complexity deterred the business from pursuing training opportunities that could significantly benefit its workforce. In the past, team members had spoken of people they knew who were being trained in first aid and mental health. Hately knew this would benefit his entire company, but the courses were essentially out of scope of CITB support. A few months ago, Sam Elford, a CITB Customer Engagement Adviser, contacted Hateley to introduce an Employer Network (EN) that supports businesses with their training needs. Elford explained how she could assist Hately to unlock the training he wanted by joining his area’s local EN. During their discussions, Hately and Elford identified first aid training for the entire workforce at T H Developments as a primary need. The pair worked together to find a suitable training provider to meet the company’s needs without requiring block release – ensuring minimal disruption to clients and workflow. Although the chosen training provider was not initially CITB- registered, they met all requirements and standards.

was simpler through employer networks

Staff training outcomes ● Increased on-site safety: with a competent first aider always available on site, Hateley gained extra confidence in the safety and preparedness of his team. ● Boosted team morale : the team felt more valued and capable, having gained theoretical and practical first aid skills. ● Enhanced support network: by facilitating CITB registration of a new training provider, Elford expanded the local network of CITB-registered providers. This expansion benefits other CITB-registered businesses by increasing access to skilled training providers locally. T H Developments’ experience illustrates the benefits of the advisers’ support in navigating CITB systems. By putting the reins in the hands of businesses, CITB advisers can quickly respond to local training needs, supporting business growth, confidence, competence and success in an evolving construction skills landscape. Of the experience, Hateley said: “TH Developments UK LTD has been working with CITB and in particular Sam Elford with reference to our training requirements. Initially using CITB was extremely difficult due to the complexity of the many schemes they run and manage. “But with the employer network, we have managed to secure training for our staff within a very short lead time and this was with a new training provider. I would recommend any CITB member to contact their adviser as soon as possible and make use of this tremendous tool.”
