Carrying out domestic work? Here are six top points you need to know if you are carrying out domestic work on non-high-risk buildings. 1 Only commit to work you are competent to deliver. If you are not competent, hire a qualified tradesperson to do the job. 2 You may be the Principal Contractor (PC) by default. If you’re the only building company on a project, you may be the PC without your client appointing you. This means you carry all of the legal duties of a PC. 3 Report compliance concerns to the PC. If you are a subcontractor, you have a legal duty to report any concerns about work not complying with regulations to the PC. 4 Hold onto all paperwork for 15 years. If any work is found to be defective, relevant authorities will want to see a clear paper trail of who was responsible for various elements of the project. 5 Ensure the client is aware of their responsibilities.
