Exciting innovation with TruTrade Central Director Nicola de Sousa enjoyed an inspiring visit with FMB member A&E Construction, led by Tony Ellard. Joined by Nathan Wilkins from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), they engaged in fruitful discussions with Tony and his team about pressing industry issues. The conversation covered apprenticeships, supporting the transition to self-employment, and addressing the skills crisis by inspiring young people. The highlight was an introduction to TruTrade, A&E Construction’s ambitious new software platform. “We understand the financial burdens of running a construction business, so we wanted to create a platform that is completely free for builders forever,” explained Tony. Designed by builders for builders, TruTrade offers free estimates, project management tools, and collaboration with merchants for best prices. Nicola and Nathan were particularly excited by its use of AI, seeing its potential to revolutionise the industry, with Tony and his team tackling industry challenges with creative, tech-savvy solutions. Preece & Sons’ exemplary craftsmanship
After being introduced to their current project on Instagram, Central Director Nicola de Sousa visited Preece & Sons (Carpentry) Ltd to see its exceptional work on a timber-framed house in Atch Lench, Worcestershire. Directors James and Martyn Preece demonstrated their commitment to quality and attention to detail in this remarkable restoration. James described their approach as “taking the house in for surgery”, highlighting the care and attention being paid to this 15 th century building. The team has: ● painstakingly restored parts of the oak cruck frame
● uncovered and rebuilt original lias stone walls previously hidden under render ● rectified past inadequate repairs following a 1983 fire ● added an oak-clad kitchen extension. The project exemplifies the high standards FMB members uphold when delivering work. Nicola also met Cam, the company’s new carpentry apprentice. “Encountering younger tradespeople on site is always encouraging for the industry’s future,” she said.
