SCOTLAND
The FMB attends major Scottish building festivals Scotland Director Gordon Nelson and members were involved in two festivals in Scotland this August, with both being part of the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe. Read about what Gordon got up to at the Green Home Festival on page 39. On 21 August, Gavin Richardson of HM Raitt & Sons Ltd gave a practical sash and case window demonstration to members at the Edinburgh Traditional Building Festival. Gavin made his debut at this festival in 2023. Unsurprisingly festival organisers were eager to involve him again this year. The festival celebrates traditional buildings, providing practical tips to the public on how to maintain and repair traditional buildings. Thanks to Gavin and HM Raitt & Sons for their help. If you would like to get involved in this festival next year, please get in touch with Gordon using the details above right.
The FMB Scotland Board, made up of 14 members, regularly meets to discuss challenges and opportunities facing Scottish builders. Here’s what was discussed at the September meeting at BE-ST in Hamilton: ● The recent recruitment campaign to attract new members in Scotland ● Regulatory and policy matters affecting builders, such as the Scottish equivalent
to the Passive House standard and the Construction Industry Training Board’s (CITB) Nation Plan for Scotland ● Trading conditions across Scotland – both client demand and prices and supply of materials ● The launch of the 2025 Master Builder Awards and the date and location for the Scotland Awards ceremony.

NORTHERN IRELAND
Diverse skill set The importance of attracting a diverse and inclusive workforce to the industry is vital. FMB members are at the forefront of key initiatives that promote change and encourage new talent to join the industry. FMB Northern Ireland recently attended a celebration of the #notjustforboys campaign, which seeks to encourage more females to look at careers in trades. Championed by Womenstec Charity CEO, Lynn Carvill, this campaign is growing from strength to strength. Increased numbers of girls and older females are developing skills to help them socially and economically to make a difference in the lives of their communities. Connaire McGreevy of CTS spoke at the event about his company’s partnership with this campaign and the significant effect it has already had on the local area. This social enterprise, based in South Down, has helped to empower a new generation of females, providing skills and confidence to keep moving forward. FMB NI will continue to champion the #notjustforboys campaign as it grows even more impactful.
