About the Program
Tennes s ee State Univers ity establis hed the Dr. Levi Watkins , J r. Ins titute in honor of this renowned heart s urgeon and alumnus . The Ins titute is compris ed of four components : Dr. Levi Watkins , J r. Medical/Dental Accelerated Pathway program; Dr. Levi Watkins , J r. Healthcare Scholars Accelerated Pathway Program; Dr. Levi Watkins , J r. Society; Dr. Levi Watkins , J r. Lecture Series ; and Dr. Levi Watkins , J r. Endowed Scholars hip. Thes e components exemplify the principles that Dr. Watkins , J r. es pous ed: academic excellence, dedication to the medical profes s ion, equality and jus tice in medical education, commitment to mentoring s tudents and s ervice to mankind.
THE JOURNEY APPLICATION PROCESS
High school students with a 3.5 GPA and at least a 28 on the ACT or a 1310 on the SAT are eligible. Apply first to Tennessee State University and complete the separate application for the Dr. Levi Watkins, Jr. Institute.
After successful completion of the application the perspective scholar is interviewed by a panel of Tennessee State University and our medical school partners administrators.
Once the interview process is completed, selected scholars are offered a scholarship that includes full tuition, fees, and room and board
BENEF I TS
Students enrolled in the Dr. Levi Watkins Jr. Institute Accelerated pathway program receive:
1) Dr. Levi Watkins endowed scholarship, includes full tuition, fees, and room and board
2) Accelerated access to medical school, earn a Biology degree in 3 years.
3) Residence in TSU’s newest living and learning facility.
4) Access to Watkins Scholars Cohort, includes mentoring, shadowing and research opportunities.

THE PROGRAM ORIENTATION
Orientation is a series of activities planned to introduce Dr. Levi Watkins, Jr. Scholars to the purpose, goals and activities of the Dr. Levi Watkins, Jr. Institute and to the outstanding contributions of Dr. Watkins, Jr. to the field of medicine. It is also designed to help scholars understand the educational opportunities available to them through the program and best practices for success as they get acquainted with college life. Introduction to the field of medicine and dentistry is also an important part of Orientation. Our medical school partners( Meharry Medical College/Dental, Sidney Kimmel Medical College and Thomas F. Frist College of Medicine) provide the experiences to familiarize scholars with the medical and dentistry field and environment as they begin their journey to become physicians and dentists.
CURRICULUM
Your participation in this program will require additional educational work on evenings and some Saturdays. All additional educational activities are designed to continue to prepare the student for entrance tests and interviews for medical/dental school.
The curriculum for the accelerated pathway program is rigorous. It is designed to ensure students success in the completion of undergraduate studies and the transition to medical school.
This program will require summer school enrollment. This will include course work, research and shadowing opportunities with our medical school partners.
CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
The Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS) training benefits students in navigating the rigorous STEM curriculum needed to progress to professional school. Students will participate in CARS training emphasizing problem-solving and test-taking skills. This is preparation for the MCAT and the DAT entrance exams. Mentoring based programming will increase students’ competitiveness for entry into medical school. These various opportunities includes Skills, Social and Emotional Intelligence Building, Leadership Development, Personal Fund Development Strategies, Biomedical Industry Work- Based Learning Opportunities, Mentoring, and Patient Training.
CAMPUS LIFE
The Dr. Levi Watkins, Jr. Institute accelerated pathways are academic driven programs that require dedication, commitment and sacrifice.
We encourage the students to find a healthy balance between academics and college life so that they may enjoy the complete college experience.
Participation in extra curriculum activities are encouraged and supported.
COMMUNI T Y SERV ICE
The Dr. Levi Watkins, Jr. Institute has partnered with area schools, (elementary, middle and high school) for community service partnerships. The participants are dedicated to mentoring, tutoring, educational and social activities. At Tennessee State University our motto is “Think. Work and Serve”. This motto is continued throughout the program and resonated within our Big Blue Family.
