C ALVERT W OODLEY 2024 FALL SALE

Welcome to Our 2024 Fall Catalog

A s I take a little breather and sit in my house sipping a glass of red wine, contemplating the year that was (as I always do as we wrap-up the production of our catalog in late-September), one thing strikes me immediately. Fall is definitely here. The weather is cooler, school is in full swing, football season is here, and pumpkin-flavored this and pumpkin-spice that are just about everywhere. We have lots of new and fun things this

W e were lucky to have the same team working on this year’s catalog as we did in 2023.Tom McKnew, Ben Giliberti, Audrey Thomson, Richard Harris and Jon Brandt all contributed their expertise and their passion, under the watchful eye of Jenn Sanders. Jenn kept everything moving along, and ahead of schedule no less, so I have to say thank you for that! Thank you also to Marlene Rice and Rusty Coolidge. We’re fortunate to have Marlene as our lead Graphic Designer because she puts her all into this catalog every year and it wouldn’t be as beautiful without her. Rusty kinda sorta “retired” from the printing business earlier this year, but he promised us he would help with this catalog, as he has for nearly 40 years. Thank you to everyone, and congratulations on a job well done!

year, including many wines that we discovered both at home and while abroad. The early reception to these wines has been really nice, and we’re excited to know that more of you will discover these great finds as the last three months of the year unfold. You can read on page 7 about a few of the wines we discovered while abroad. While the majority of this catalog is wine related, please don’t miss the features on the noteworthy spirits (p. 38–47), beers (p. 80–82), and cheese/deli items (p. 98–99, 101) we have at CW. We’re proud of our entire selection throughout the store, and know you’ll find plenty to tempt you on each and every page. Junk mail has gotten a little out of control for all of us these days, but I encourage you to take the time to read and enjoy this catalog. We worked really hard on it (see sidebar) and we’re proud of the results. And the sale lasts all the way through to the end of the year, so take your time and enjoy it!

The Fall and Winter seasons are full of festive gatherings, so I hope you celebrate with some delicious goodies from CW. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff is ready to help you with whatever you may need. From the CW family to yours, we wish you a Happy, Healthy, and Peaceful Holiday Season.

small wonder why Bordeaux has been capturing the imagination of the wine world for centuries. Bisected by the Gironde River, the wines of the “Left Bank” primarily feature Cabernet Sauvignon, which offers the necessary tannins and structure for long aging, often blended with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and sometimes Petit Verdot. On the “Right Bank,” Merlot dominates in St.-Emilion and Pomerol, supported by Cabernet Franc and occasionally Cabernet Sauvignon. Here, the soils mix gravel and clay, producing rich, more deeply fruity wines, depending on the sand or limestone content of the soil. Bordeaux’s enduring appeal is undeniable, and at Calvert Woodley, we’ve spent over four decades cultivating relationships with Bordeaux’s winemakers. This dedication allows us to import exceptional wines from family- run "Petits Châteaux" to top classified growths, offering the finest selections from every vintage.

4 — CALVERT WOODLEY 2024 FALL SALE

IN MEMORIAM

I n April of this year, we lost someone very important to Calvert Woodley, and to me personally. It’s hard to put into words just how much my father Ed meant to me, my family, and so many others, but to say he is missed is an understatement. My father had many accomplishments in his personal and professional life, of which I’m sure he would say his family was at the very top of that list. His four children and seven grandchildren were his passion, and his family gave him strength and joy. In 2016, to commemorate my father’s 50 th anniversary in the wine business, I wrote the following… My father was born and raised in Brooklyn during the Jackie Robinson-led heyday of the Dodgers, and worked on Wall Street for a short time before moving to DC to work at the Securities and Exchange Commission. It was at this time that he met my mom, Bonnie, a DC native whose father was in the grocery business. They married in 1964. My grandpa opened Woodley Supermarket, located on

Connecticut Avenue in Cleveland Park, in the 1940s. Nearly 20 years later, when a nearby market called Spund’s was closing, my grandpa talked with my dad about opening a liquor store in that location, to complement the grocery store. Being young and adventurous, my dad left the SEC, and Woodley Wine & Liquor was born. Fast forward to 1982, when Woodley merged with Calvert Liquors and moved up the street to our current location. Through the years, Calvert Woodley has received a number of awards, including being named one of the 10 Best Wine and Liquor Stores in the US by Beverage Dynamics magazine in 1992. Twenty years later, in 2012, my dad was named Retailer of the Year by Market Watch magazine, a huge honor and big thrill. My dad has taught me a lot, but right near the top of that list is that personal relationships and how you treat people are key. Relationships with our customers, employees, suppliers, they’re all important. At the end of the day, I’m going to look back and think about all the people I met along the way and the experiences I’ve had, more so than money, awards, and press clippings. I know my dad feels the same way. Eight years later those words still ring true. Thank you for everything Dad, and rest in peace. — Michael Sands

It received impressive scores of 92 points from Vinous and 91 points from JebDunnuck.com.

Vinexpo 2024

Discovering New Wines with a Touch of Paris Magic!

F or the second year in a row, Jenn Sanders and I spent three memorable days in Paris in February, attending the huge wine and spirits trade show known as Vinexpo. It was great to meet with many of the suppliers we’ve known for years, who provide wines that have become CW customer

The last two new suppliers I’ll mention here are family-owned and -operated wineries located just seven miles apart from each other in northeast Italy, home of Prosecco. The first winery is Bedin, and we met with Alessandra, daughter of the owner. Their Proseccos ranged from bone dry to slightly sweet (the ironically named “extra dry”) and each was a hit, especially for the price. The other winery is Andreola, introduced to us by Commercial Director Magnus Saccone. Magnus has family in the DC area so we talked for quite a while and heard some interesting stories. The Andreola Proseccos were excellent as well,

favorites. It was also wonderful to meet several new people, helping us discover wines from Portugal, Spain, Italy (and more) that have recently arrived at CW and are sure to become new favorites. One of the people we met for the first time was Rita Cardoso Pinto, co-owner (with her sister) of Quinta do

Michael Sands, Jenn Sanders and Julien Noël from Châteaux Chambrun and Moncets

offering a bit more complexity and intensity of flavor. Learn more about Andreola winery in our interview with owner Stefano Pola on page 36. We’re thrilled to add both of these Prosecco producers to our selection. All in all, we met with so many people at Vinexpo and discovered some great new wines. We hope you like them as much as we do! Also for the second year in a row, Jenn and I were fortunate enough to attend the Commanderie du Bontemps black-tie gala dinner at Château de Versailles. The evening started with a private tour of the

Pinto, originally started by her father. Her winery is located 15 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean, about an hour’s drive north from Lisbon. We were duly impressed with all nine wines we tasted, even though most of the grapes were ones we were not very familiar with. It was a learning experience for us and Rita patiently guided us through the tasting, and we happily selected two whites and two reds to bring to CW. Another woman we met was Chiara Sorgente, Commercial Director for MontRubí winery. MontRubí is located in Penedes, just west of Barcelona in

northeast Spain. We tasted about 15 wines with her, and are pleased to present four of them to you here. One is a “Pét-nat” (Pétillant Naturel) rosé called L’Ancestrale. Truth be told I’m not typically a big fan of Pét-nats, but I really enjoyed this one and enjoyed it with dinner just a few weeks ago in September. All of their wines had a brightness, a freshness, that make them so easy to enjoy.

palace, followed by a beautiful dinner with

roughly 800 people in a very long room inside Versailles. With dinner we had 2018 Château Olivier Blanc, 2010 Château Montrose, 2009 Château Lagrange, and 2005

Dominique Ferret, Michael Sands, Jenn Sanders and Stephanie Ferret from Domaine Guillaman

Château Lafite Rothschild. With dessert we had one of my very favorites, the 2015 Château Climens. Tres magnifique! It was a magical evening, one I won’t soon forget.

Petit Château Bordeaux

Chemin Royal Moulis-en-Médoc 2019

O ne of the hallmarks of Calvert Woodley is our deep, personal relationships with winemakers across Europe, especially in Bordeaux. Over more than 40 years in business, we’ve built strong connections not only with the renowned estates but also with smaller, family-owned vineyards—known as "petit châteaux"—that have become a signature of our selection. For those unfamiliar, "Petit Château" isn’t a formal designation but rather a concept, typically referring to wines from lesser-known, family-run estates. These wines offer the elegance and depth of Bordeaux at an approachable price, giving you a taste of the region’s best without the premium price tag. As direct importers, we have the privilege of tasting hundreds of exceptional wines each year, allowing us to carefully curate what we believe to be one of the finest selections of petit châteaux available. Our collection is not only broad but also deep, featuring standout wines from acclaimed vintages like 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2020. We invite you to explore this small selection of delicious and affordable petit château Bordeaux currently in stock. Stop by our store to chat with our wine team and discover more. And remember—the best (and most enjoyable) way to learn is by tasting!

Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, it opens with a classic nose of crushed berries, cassis, vanilla, and violets. It is medium-bodied and nicely textured on the palate, with noteworthy complexity. It is enjoyable now and has an aging potential of three to five years thanks to its classic structure of smooth tannins.
