THE WINES OF Spain
2022 Mengoba “Brezo” Mencía Bierzo, Spain
W hen it comes to wine, Spain can stand shoulder to shoulder with the likes of France and Italy with its rich history. Whether it’s the rich, dusty tannins of a well-aged Rioja, the brooding depth and intensity of Ribera del Duero, the lithe brightness, minerality and freshness of Rías Baixas, or the intense, minerally depth and firm, almost grippy, tannins of Priorat, Spain has a plethora of historically treasured

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste and Château Cos d’Estournel. The skills he honed in Bordeaux are clearly evident in this stylish wine made in the Spanish region of Bierzo from the indigenous Mencía grape. The Mencía’s rich red-fruit character shines through with notes of dark cherry, raspberry and forest fruits, followed by a lovely spice and gentle peppery note on the long, fresh finish.
wines to be mentioned alongside the likes of Bordeaux, Burgundy, Piedmont and Tuscany. However, where Spain sets itself apart is in its willingness to revere the old but embrace the new. Unlike some of its neighbors, it takes next to no effort to find cutting-edge technology in Spain normally found in “New World” wineries in the U.S. and Australia. Spain has been fearless in trying new techniques and technology to perfect its wines, looking for ways to make them better while still embracing the past. The result is the ability to make a wide spectrum of wines, from great values to collectible treasures, and from delicate whites to opulent reds. And all while still being some of the most food-friendly wines in the world.
