THE WINES OF Argentina
A rgentina might seem like a newcomer to the global wine scene, but its winemaking
history stretches back to 1618 with Jesuit missionaries planting a white grape called “Criolla Grande” for use in making communion wine. The modern wine industry began to take shape in 1853 when French agronomist Michel Pouget introduced French varietals like Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Malbec quickly became a flagship grape for the country, and while Argentina is renowned for its Malbec wines, ranging from affordable to ultra-premium, its wine repertoire extends beyond this variety. Over the past 171 years, Argentine winemakers have diversified their offerings, cultivating grapes such as Bonarda from Italy and Torrontés from Spain, alongside Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah.
