Bayntun Catalogue

Peter Harrington l o n d o n

W e recently acquired a private collection of books in fine bindings formed by the Birmingham lawyer, Gordon William Quance, most with his monogram stamped in gilt. Mr Quance had all his books bound by the firm of Bayntun of Bath, one of the most successful English bookbinders of the 20th century, and evidently spared no expense in commissioning them. The firm founded by George Bayntun in 1894 worked in the classic English tradition of fine handcrafted leather bindings, initially competing for business with the likes of Birdsall, Sangorski and Sutcliffe, Zaehnsdorf, and others. In 1939 Bayntun bought up the rival bindery originally founded in Bath by Robert Rivière; the atelier was afterwards known as the Bayntun-Rivière Bindery. The condition of the books in this list is generally fine; full descriptions of the individual items are available by clicking on each item. Most of the books are from the Quance collection, with a few additions. On our website you will also find a subject category for books from stock bound by Bayntun, Rivière, and Bayntun-Rivière, as well as other categories of bindings, including new fine bindings by our own workshop, the Chelsea Bindery.
