REL IG ION O R CHR IST IAN ITY? (Continued from Page 6) the Word, as fed by faithful teachers, and watching them grow into a man in Christ Jesus, feeding on the meat of the Word, speaking the truth in love, and teaching others the way o f life. The de sire of the babe for the milk of the Word has become a healthy spiritual ap petite for the meat of the Word. Then one begins to realize it is not a form of godliness, but a life, that brings zest in its living. Animated Christian Living “ The water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:14). “ He that believeth on me, as the scrip ture hath said, out o f his belly [inner most being] shall flow rivers o f living water” (John 7:38). “ I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abun dantly” (John 10:10). Who has not seen a clear spring of water bubbling up out of the ground, and, after partaking thereof, has re marked, “ My, that is wonderful water” ? As that spring never runs dry, neither does the fountain o f life found in Christ Jesus. Truly out o f the believer will flow living water, life more abundant, life abounding with joy. Sometimes a spring becomes clogged and the flow of water is impeded. Like wise there may be an impediment in the Christian life. Often so-called recreation should be spelled “ wreckreation.” If it does not “ re-create,” it wrecks. All forms •of pleasure may be so judged. “ Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will o f God” (Rom. 12:2). It is not conformation, but transfor mation by a renewing of the mind, through a systematic study of God’s Word, that animates the Christian, and furnishes a continuous supply of living water. Carnality is likewise an impediment in the Christian life. “ And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ” (1 Cor. 3:11). Paul thus wrote to the church at Corinth, yet note in chapter one, verse four, “ I thank my God always on your behalf,” and in verse six we read, “ the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you,” also in verse ten he addresses them as “ brethren.” Nevertheless, there had been no development in their Christian lives. Instead of an animated life, full of love for each other, theirs was one of contention, strife and division. What was the impediment? Carnality! The flesh was governing instead of the Spirit; they were living at the lowest strata in their Christian lives. The spirit of the city of Corinth was influencing the spirit o f the church, instead of the (Continued on Page 28) M A R C H , I 9 4 9
