K HE Bible has almost as much to say about death as it has about life. “ Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them” (Rev. 14:13). Death as viewed by the Christian: “ For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain,” is a supernatural victory. “ Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Cor. 15:57). “ O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” (v. 55). This is Paul’s shout of tri umph over death and its terrors. For the Christian, Christ “ hath abolished death, and hath brought life and im mortally to light through the gospel” (2 Tim. 1:10). Words of Dying Saints D. L. Moody: “ Earth is receding, heaven is advancing, and I am passing through the gates into thè city. Oh, this is wonderful!” Benjamin Abbott: “ Glory to God, I see the heavens open before me.” Bishop Haven: “ God lifts me up in His arms. There is no darkness; it is all light and brightness.” Lillian Lee, aged ten : “ Oh, Papa, what a sight! The golden gates are opened!” Dr. Cullen: “ I wish I had speech, I would describe how beautiful it is to die.” John Holland: “ Now, farewell, world; welcome, heaven. The daystar from on high hath visited my heart.” John Bunyan: “ We shall meet ere long to sing the new song and remain forever in a world without end.” John Wesley: “ The best of all—God is with us.” Martin Luther: “ Into Thy hands I commit my spirit; Thou hast redeemed me, Thou faithful God!” Words like those above show to us the comfort dying saints may have, who have been born-again, and redeemed by the blood of the Lamb. What Were The Grounds of Their Comfort? These souls were resting in the Lord— in a finished work of redemption upon the cross for them. They were assured of sins forgiven, and of eternal life. They had ceased from their own works or goodness, and had been saved by grace through faith, as a gift from God (Eph. 2:8, 9 ). They had learned to trust God for all things, and had committed their souls unto a faithful God for eternal keeping.
Paul said: “ I know whom I have be lieved, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day” (2 Tim. 1:12). “ I am persuaded that neither death, nor life . . . nor powers . . . shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:38,39). These saints, like Paul, were fully persuaded; all accounts were settled, they rested on God’s sure prom ise, and upon His Word to them. Christ is victor over death and hell, and has the keys to heaven and eternal life. “ I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never per ish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand" (John 10:27-29). “ I am the resurrection and the life . . . Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?” (John 11:25,40). An old Scotch minister lay dying. A brother-minister visited him. “ Well, how goes the battle?” he asked. “ Not always so easily—sometimes the devil comes and reminds me of my youthful sins. Then I quote to him: ‘The blood o f Jesus Christ . . . cleanseth us from all sin.’ Then he leaves me for a while. But he comes back again and tempts me to be lieve in my own works.” “ What do you tell him then?” asked the visitor. “ I quote the words: ‘For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.’ Then Satan must flee again.” Look to Christ when living and when dying. Trust in Christ now and when you are dying. While I draw this fleeting breath, When mine eyes shall close in death, When I rise to worlds unknown, And behold Thee on Thy throne, — T oplady . Christ has saved hundreds of millions down through the last 1900 years, and He is able to save you now and forever. He can bring you over Jordan’s chilling waves, and His grace is sufficient for thee. “ The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose, I’ll never, no never, desert to his foes!” “ Yea, though I walk through the val ley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil . . . thv rod and thy staff they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4).
