I always wished I had a group of women who supported me and uplifted me because I faced a lot of adversity in my life growing up. Building a community of women who support you was something I knew I wanted to have. What are you most looking forward to now that you’re a member of the Fraternity? Getting to know the chapters closest to me and contribute on projects to help other young women. In this day and age, I think the girls in middle school and high school could use a supportive and uplifting community of women, and I’m excited to work with my local chapters to do that and support women in my surrounding communities. What advice would you offer other women considering joining Alpha Phi as alumnae? It’s never too late! Every day is a new day and a new opportunity to make a difference.
Melinda Shier- Halverson Who invited you to join Alpha Phi? My daughter, Kylee Halverson (Omicron-Missouri) What made you want to join Alpha Phi at this phase of your life? I saw how much Alpha Phi did for my
daughter and how much she grew by taking on leadership roles. I didn’t have that opportunity in college – the friends she’s made, the opportunities she’s had, the travel she’s experienced. She invited me join, and I said, ‘At my age? It’s not too late?’ I was honored and flattered to join, and I’m excited to jump in and work with the collegiates and other alumnae. What are you most looking forward to now that you’re a member of the Fraternity? I’ve been a lifelong volunteer in schools and with charities, so I’m looking forward to continuing that in such a positive organization with women who are so committed, regardless of their age. I’m looking forward to working with the collegians and helping to attract more members so more women can enjoy this lifelong experience. What advice would you offer other women considering joining Alpha Phi as alumnae? I’ve reached the age where I didn’t think there were many new opportunities and experiences available to me, but this has shown me that it doesn’t matter how old you are to start something new, meet new friends and make an impact.
