The Alpha Phi home at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, has undergone a major renovation resulting in a brand-new, totally updated and stylish live-in facility for our members of the Beta chapter. In the summer of 2023, the first floor of the facility underwent a total makeover including new furniture, fixtures, decor and paint in the foyer, hallways, sitting room, library and living room. This chapter house is managed by 1872 Properties, the Fraternity’s affiliate of the organization that supports the Fraternity and its collegiate chapters by enhancing the Alpha Phi experience through ensuring the existence of safe, competitive and well-managed chapter facilities. 1872 Properties owns or manages approximetly 40 chapter facilities across the United States and Canada, including 25 residential houses.
The Beta house is five stories tall with a total square footage of 13,680 square feet. The house sleeps 42 members each year with 26 bedrooms total (not including the House Director suite). The basement of the facility is a full commercial kitchen, with a large dining room with the capacity to host the entire chapter. There is an abundance of communal space, particularly on the redesigned first floor. While there is a commercial food service that occupies the commercial kitchen space, the members have 24/7 access to their own kitchenette and fridges. "The pure aesthetics of the house – especially after the revamp – make it competitive with other sorority houses on campus,” explained Hannah Mortenson, manager of collegiate properties for Alpha Phi. “It has such
beautiful common spaces [that our members enjoy]. Additionally, the Beta chapter house is the only house on campus with air conditioning." The facility is university-owned, so entry into the house is granted through university ID cards. All vendors are granted access with the help of the house director, JoAnne Zunich. The Beta Chapter hosted its parents' weekend at the same time as its annual Red Dress Gala wherein family members were invited to explore the house and take in the changes after attending a breakfast with the chapter members.
