way; perhaps after all the Germans are right.” And if some of the conquered na tions refuse to give ear to the lying German anti-Semitic propaganda, then, as in Holland, the Nazis themselves pro ceed to make savage “reprisals” against the Jews. For instance, in order to in timidate the Dutch sympathizers of the Jews in Amsterdam, that city was fined $10,190,000. Hilversum a n d Zaandam were fined $1,750,000 and $375,000 re spectively. All the earth is being more and more impregnated with the devil’s virus— Jewphobia. This is true even in our Western Hemisphere. Argentina, one of the most enlightened governments in the New World, is nevertheless helping to pay fbr the cost of Clarinada—an amazingly anti-Semitic magazine. And in our own United States, the whisper of the Jew-baiter is being heard on all sides: "Itis not Hitler who is the enemy of America; but the Jew.” Pamphleteers in all parts of the nation are hissing their hate,, even doing so sometimes under the garb of fundamentalists. And the ignorant and uninformed parrot around what they read from these pens that serve the arch-anti-Semite—Satan himself (cf. Rev. 12). ' The Hope of the World However, the Christian who is stand ing firmly on the mount of God’s “sure word of prophecy” (2 Pet. 1:19) knows well whereunto all this is leading. He says confidently with David: “I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree. Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found”

farther, were ordered to stand aside, and were shot, and their bodies left lying. The Jews were given neither food nor drink during the whole of their ghastly march, and those who tried to help themselves to some water from the ditches were shot dead. Altogether between Chelm and Dolbyczow 1,700 were shot dead . . . “On this march a further lot, be tween 250 and 300, were shot; in all about 2,000 were massacred during the four-days’ march.” When the survivors reached the Bug River, the Germans ordered them to cross a bridge or swim the river into Russia within twenty minutes, or they would be shot. Many, attempting to swim, were drowned. Then those that crossed were met by Soviet guards who compelled them to return to the Ger* man side. Again the Germans ordered them to swim back to Russia or be shot. Those that endured were not sent back by the Russians, but w e r e arrested. Many died of exhaustion in a “hospital.” But why continue these harrowing and by no means isolated tales ? We have said enough to show that Hitler does not propose to be outdone, but rather to attain the distinction of being the most bloody, heartless, and depraved Jew- baiter of history. And we freely pre dict that if Germany wins this war, and the Lord tarries, the historians of the future will make Pharoah, Haman, and their ilk look like miserable little weaklings beside Adolf Hitler in the profession of Jew-baiting. Methods of Spreading Jewphobia But, outside of Germany, the nefarious work of the devil in persecuting "the woman [Israel] which brought forth the man child [Christ]” (Rev. 13:131) goes on apace. A terrible recrudescence of anti-Semitism is s w e e p i n g over France. The Vichy government is try ing to divert the minds of the French populace from the actual causes of the French disaster by blaming the J e w s and h o w l i n g for their blood. World Dominion declares: “There is scarcely a village in Occupied France in which s o m e Jews have not been put to death. Sometimes it 'is individual, and sometimes wholesale slaughter. The brutality with which these execu tions are accompanied is unex ampled in atrocity. In some cities the toll of the dead reached thou sands, and in others almost all the Jewish male population was shot.” Wherever the Nazi army goes, it car ries with it its d e a d l y propaganda against the Jews. And even where it, never existed before, the deadly virus of Jewphobia soon has its deadly ef fect in the adoption of this attitude: “But we never did like the Jews any-

and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them” (Jer. 30:7-9). Daniel repeats the promise: “There shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered” (Dan. 12:1). And here is our own “ blessed hope,” O church of God! Even before this de liverance that must come soon to Judah’s sons of sorrow, the church of God is to be "caught up . . . to meet the Lord in the air,” as it is written: ■“ For the Lord h i m s e l f shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ, shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in . the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord” (T Thess. 4:16, 17). But “ the blessed hope” .is also the hope of the world. For it is when peace and safety come to “David’s royal city” that the Son of God “shall come down like rain upon the mown grass,” "break in pieces the o p p r e s s o r ” (cf. Psa. 72:1-9), and “speak peace unto the na tions” (Zech. 9:10, R. V.). True it is that the nations are being shaken to their foundations, and that crowns and thrones are crumbling. But to the saints whose heads are above the clouds where the “sure word of prophecy” illumes, the shaking of the nations brings hope, and not despair. It is written: “ Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; And I will shake’ all nations, and the Desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the Lord of hosts . . . The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the Lord of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the Lord of hosts” (Hag. 2:6, 7, 9). Come! C o m e quickly! Lord Jesus, come! And never has the answer to that prayer seemed so imminent as now. Watch!

Strength in Weakness By ETHEL M. CLARKSON

In the midst of storm and stress, Thou remainest; As my feeble strength grows less. Thou remainest. Earthly joys may fade away. As dissolves this house of clay. But In God’s eternal day. Thou remainest.

As the valley dark I tread, Thou remainest; With Thine arms beneath my head, Thou remainest, Earth grows dim to mortal eye, Darkness here, but Light on high— Hallelujah! is my cry, Christ rcmaineth!
