A Song to Jesus R evelation 15:1-4 MEMORY VERSE: "O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joy ful noise to the rock of our salvation” (Psa. 95:1). APPROACH: Did you have a birth day cake on your birthday? Did all the family stand around and sing, "Happy birthday to you” ? Sometimes people have songs dedicated to them over the radio. It is nice to have a song sung especially to you,'isn’t it? Even Jesus Christ likes us to sing to Him. Wouldn’t you like to learn a song to sing to Jesus? I can teach you the words. LESSON STORY: While John was on Patmos he saw a vision of heaven. Throngs of people were standing by the glassy sea, with the harps of God, and they "Were singing a song to Jesus. The words were like this: "Great and mar velous are thy works, Lord God Almigh ty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints. Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest” (Rev. 15:3,4). The vision which John saw makes us think of the song which we sometimes sing in church: “Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns Wouldn’t you like to join in' the great song to Jesus? The words are pretty big words, but they have a simple meaning. They mean that no one is so wonderful as the Lord Jesus. Is He wonderful to you ? Do you ex pect to be standing one day around the glassy sea and singing to Him? I can teach you the words, but only Jesus can teach you the tune. If you want to sing His praises in glory, you will have to open your heart here and ask Him to come in and show you how Around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim Falling down before Thee, ' Which wert, and art, And evermore Shalt be.”
Points and Problems 1. “ And there was war in heaven” (Rev. 12:7). The past tense should not lead the reader into any Miltonic in terpretation of this chapter. There may have been war in heaven when Satan, as “the anointed cherub,” was cast out of “the holy mountain of God” (Ezek. 28:13-17). Of that we are not told. But the “war” spoken of in Revelation 12 is still future. The Apostle John em ploys the past tense only in describing what he had seen. But the vision spoke of things in the future. This “war in heaven” will take place exactly in the middle of the seventieth week of Daniel’s great prophecy (See Revelation 12:6. The 1,260 days make exactly half of seven years, the prophetic year being 360 days.) 2. “Michael . . . fought” (v. 7). From the tenth chapter of Daniel, we learn that behind the rise and fall of nations, there is a struggle not only between the earthly rulers but also between good and evil angels of God’s kingdom and the Satanic hierarchy. It appears from Daniel 12:1 that the angelic guardian of the nation of Israel is “Michael . . . the great prince.” Therefore, it is not surprising to find Michael fighting in the war of Revelation 12:7, for the first six verses of this chapter de scribe Satan’s final assault upon that nation, here represented by the “woman clothed with the sun.” As these notes are being written, the German war machine is reported to be breaking through Greek defenses and British, lines. If his progress continues, Hitler’s goal is the Suez canal, Egypt, and Palestine, whiph would mean terrible disaster to the Jews there. But' some day Michael will stand up in defense of this people, and that will mean the end of. all haters of God’s chosen people. 3. “ The great dragon was cast out” (v. 9). Six main periods appear in the career and destiny of Satan: First, he is the creation of God in “the holy mountain of God” (Ezek. 28:14). Second, because of sin he is cast out of his original place and dwells in “heavenly places” (Eph. 6:11,12, R.V.), where he is today. Third, after the war o f Revelation 12:7, he is cast “ down to the earth” (v. 9, R.V.). Fourth, after the seven- year period of divine judgment, at the beginning of the millennial kingdom, he will be cast into “ the bottomless pit” (Rev. 20:3). Fifth, at the close of the millennial kingdom, he will be loosed for a brief season on the “earth” (Rev. 20:7,8). Sixth, after this season of limited freedom, he will be sent away forever into the “lake of fire” (Rev. 20:10). The descent of Satan from heaven to hell was not accomplished in a single step, but covers millenniums of time. God is long-suffering, but the doom of rebellion is sure. 4. “By the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony” (v. 11). The blood covers all the guilt of -all
