Many pictures are given in the Word setting forth the beauty and fruitful ness of a life of this kind: 1. John 15 pictures the fruitfulness of the branch that abides in the Vine (Christ Himself). 2. The abiding life is like a watered garden (Isa. 58:11), 3. The one who is satisfied in Christ constantly refreshes other lives. “Out of his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38, lit. trans.). Many other pictures of this life in filled by the Lord Himself all tell of the blessedness of letting the Lord Jesus Christ into our everyday tasks. SEPTEMBER 21, 1941 THE PLACE OF EDUCATION IN A DEMOCRACY P roverbs 16:16; E cclesiastes 2:26; 7:11, 12; 1 K ings 3:7, 9 ; 4:29, 30 By Homer A. Kent Introduction What we lack most in our American democracy is not education. In this free country with its countless educational institutions there are boundless oppor tunities for receiving an education in whatever field a person may choose. And increasingly the American people are taking advantage of these oppor tunities. More individuals are receiving formal education now than ever before. Think of the high schools, colleges, uni versities, specialized schools, night schools, and the like. It seems as though almost every one is thinking of taking some kind of educational course some where. But does it appear that we as a nation are morally better, happier, holier, more satisfied than we formerly were? Quite, evidently not. More and more it becomes apparent that what we need in this democracy is Christian edu cation. Education without Christ can be positively dangerous. But education guided by the light of the gospel 'Is a boon to any man. In this free country, what an oppor tunity- is ours to receive a Christian education! We wish to consider now several phases of Christian education. For Those Who Have Topics I. CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: ITS CONTENT. The Bible of course is the textbook for a Christian education. A young man or young woman cannot have a Chris tian education who does not know the Bible. The central figure in the Bible is Christ. A Christian education centers about Christ, His pre-existence, His birth, His teachings, His spotless life, His death, resurrection and ascension, His glorious return, His church, and all the other great doctrines of the Chris tian faith. The supreme knowledge is to know Christ and His purposes in relation to the life of the world.

them were used by the Lord to preach an eloquent sermon on God’s care and provision for His c h i l d r e n (Matt. 6:28-34). The lowly little sparrow was used as an illustration of His watchful ness and care in the smallest details of our lives (Matt. 10:29-31). Even the sometimes boring task of dish washing was used by the Lord to re prove thè scribes and Pharisees for their hypocrisy of heart when their outward lives were s e e m i n g l y pious (Matt. 23:25,26). The Lord Jesus Christ found a ser mon in both small and great things. He, as the Creator of all things (John 1:3), made the towering redwoods, but He also made the tiny violets and the humming birds, and He took as much care in making the small things as He did in making the showier ones. In His earthly life, the Lord Jesus Christ lived through the daily routine, and He, Himself, has been tempted like as we are, yet He was without sin. He knows and understands perfectly our earthly cares and temptations and also our joys. For Those Who Have Topics X. GOD’S, IDEA!, FOR OUR EVERY DAY LIVES (Psa. 1). / If you have time, contrast in terms of concrete present-day activities the picture of the “ungodly” man Us it is given in this Psalm with this “blessed man.” As one looks at the “blessed man,” he realizes that this is a picture of the Lord Jesus Christ. No one ever per fectly lived out that ideal in everyday life except the Lord Jesus Christ. The glorious fact that “Christ liveth in me,” as a Christian, makes it possible for the Christian to realize that ideal in his life. In so far as Christ has complete control of our lives, He can live out His life in and through us (Gal. 2:20; Eph. 3:17; Phil. 1:21). II. THE E X T E N T OF GOD’S IN TEREST'IN OUR LIVES. 1. God is interested not only in the spiritual part of our lives but also in the body and soul (1 Thess. 5:23). 2. He will direct our paths if we acknowledge Him in all our ways (Prov. 3:6). 3. Whatsoever we do Is to be to His glory (Col. 3:17). 4. God uses His Word to show us what His will is, and if we study it with open heart and with prayer, the Holy Spirit will illuminate the Word .and guide us into all truth (John 16:13). He will make us workmen who need not be ashamed (2 Tim. 2:15), for we will rightly divide the Word of truth (2 Tim. 2:15, R. V., “handling aright the word of truth” ), and be approved of Him. HI. THE RESULTS OF LETTING CHRIST INDWELL EVERY PART . OF OUR LIVES.
