device of the adversary to undermine faith by suggesting that the promised guidance has not b§en provided, point ing- to affliction and trial in proof, whereas faith grows in chastening. —C. F. Hogg. 9. Meeting in the Harvest Field. “The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust” (Ruth 2:12). We . . . find Ruth toiling in the burning sun as a gleaner, and there she meets for the first time the lord of the harvest . . . Let us . . . turn from Boaz to the true Lord of the harvest. Does He meet us there, toiling in the heat of the summer’s sun? Knowing fully all we have done, does that knowl edge bring joy to His heart? And is it a joy to us to know that He knows all? —J. Hudson Taylor. 10. Receiving to Give “The things that thou hast heard of me . . ., the same commit thou to faith ful men, who shall be able to teach others also” (2 Tim. 2:2). Nothing has been given to us by God to be selfishly retained and consumed upon self. We receive that we may in turn give out again. God created the great seas, that they might give out again. The clouds receive from the »eas, that they may give out again. This is God’s plan for my life, for your life. Notice that this is God’s plan for carrying on His work.—Selected. 11. ' Meditation “O how love I thy law! it is my med itation all the day” (Psa. 119:97). In meditation we give God the oppor tunity to speak to us. 8. Part of Our Training "Being fully persuaded, that what he had promised, he was able also to per form” (Rom. 4:£1).. The Lord is training His children to perceive Himself; the promise is part of this educational process. When the Lord gives us faith, and we rest on His promise, then we are brought face to face with Him . . . We feel how necessary He is to the whole system of our spiritual life, how truly He enters into it, so that in Him we live, and move, and have our being. —Charles Haddon Spurgeon. 6. What It Means to Be Sealed “Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption” (Eph. 4:30). Sealing means ownership, and owner ship implies fellowship. Sealing means security, and security ■implies confi dence. Sealing means authority, and authority implies power. It is the will and the intention of God that every one of His children shall be sealed by the Holy Ghost and living in the en joyment of unbroken fellowship with Him, that we should enjoy an unwav ering confidence, because the' Holy Spirit witnesses with our spirits that we are the children of God. —W. H, Aldis. The Teaching of the Spirit “The Spirit of truth . . . shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you” (John 16:13, 14). Do the words of the Lord Jesus have a convincing, comforting, melting, im pelling effect upon you? . . . It means that you are coming to them under the tuition of the Holy Spirit; and He so vitalizes them that you are as close to Christ . . . as His immediate disciples were. There may be seasons when they fail to influence as they should. It is because we have gone to them without making sure of the teachership and lordship o f the Spirit. —-Alexander Smellie. God’s Chastening “The trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold” (1 Pet. 1:7). Thomas a Kempis said that, if two paths present themselves, we should choose that which is most set with thorns . . . Many are dismayed because of difficulties. But consider that, when the Lord was baptized, . . . “imme diately tile Spirit driveth him forth” to be tempted of Satan. It is a favorite 7. 8.
Faith ‘‘According to your faith be it unto you” (Matt. 9:29). Faith is the only way through which God Himself can have absolute room to work, for faith is just that colorless and simple attitude by which man ceases from his own works and enters into the work of God. The reason faith is so mighty is that it just makes way for the omnipotence of God. Therefore the two sentences are . . . exactly par allel: “With God all things are possible,” and, “All things are possible to him that believeth.”—A. B. Simpson. Our Saviour’s Praying “He went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God” (Lk. 6:12). To the hills at nightfall, alone, weary, burdened with a world’s redemption, came Christ to pray. The stars came out one by one above Him; the silence deepened around Him as the night wore on. And when, after midnight had passed and the morning star stood in the heavens, the first rays of dawn tipped the trans-Jordamc hills, Christ was still in communion with His Father.—Selected. Their Forward Look “The dead shall be raised incorrup tible” (1 Cor. 15:52). “Them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him” (lxThess. 4:14). Lo! our loved ones gone before, Do they rest in hope no more?. Have they in the Saviour’s love All they could desire above? No! for though divinely fair, Sweet the promise with them there— How their sleeping dust will rise Seeing Jesus ’mid the skies; Rapturous wait they on the word— “Ever with” and “like” the Lord. —J. Denham Smith. God’s Will Among Men "He doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth” (Dan. 4:35). We are in a time when bewilderment and confusion are the portion of our lives. Out of the confusion there is no other way than that of prolonged and serious and patient study of the will of God. This is the world for which Christ died and in which He lives ever more; and in its noisy, murky foundry is somehow being cast a bell which shall ring His praises alone. —J, F. Newton. 2. S. 4.
