THE NEW M A N

T h e f ir s t s in o f S a t a n was that he endeavored to be as God (Isaiah 14:14). Later he enticed the first two human beings into sin by promising them that if they obeyed him they would “be as gods” (Gene sis 3:5). The public has recently been in formed (Life, October 1, 1965) how close scientists are to the goal of be ing like God. Paradoxically, the au thor of the article says at one place that achievements are to be expected which will be so fantastic that it will be difficult to distinguish mad scien tists from sane, and at another place he asks how we will decide whom to let play the part of God when ulti mate decisions are to be made. It is said that sober scientists contemplate not if but when man will “ control his own heredity and evolu tion.” Men of science are struggling to learn how to rearrange portions of the genetic material. “When that time comes, man’s powers will be truly godlike.” It is postulated that human beings might be constructed who could even live in the depths of the sea. It is thought that the time may come when people can be copied, so that many duplicates of a single in dividual could be produced. The au thor asks, “Would anyone like to name the great man he would care to see duplicated by the hundreds, by the thousands, or even by the doz en?” This is an interesting question in an age when television makeup is more important in selecting a man for greatness than the content of what he has to say. If men are mass- produced, will th ey have legal rights, or will they be the property of the sc ient i st s who produced them? It is believed that within 10 or 15 years a woman may be able to go into a store and select for herself a frozen day-old embryo from a row of envelopes. The envelopes will be labeled so she may make a selection according to eye-color or other fea tures which strike her fancy. This is not the same as virgin birth, but vir gin birth may also become common.

(Unless classical genetics can be cir cumvented, people produced in this way will all be females. According to some preachers, such people should be sinless, like Christ. The blasphemy of such a view becomes more evident as the practicality of producing peo ple in this manner comes closer to realization, though actually it was just as blasphemous before.) “ Education by injection” sounds like a blessing to college students, but misinformation could be admin istered as easily as truth. Brain centers could be stimulated to erase memories and to bring back forgot ten ones, but by the same technique people could be made to think they remembered events which in reality never happened. This would be more efficient than present-day brainwash ing techniques. Some of these things go beyond anything indicated in Bible proph ecy for the end times, and it seems that the Lord will return and put a stop to it before science can go so far. The author of the article quotes from Jeremi ah 13:23. “ Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that a. e accustomed to do evil.” He comments that it will be possible for us to change anything it pleases us to change, and then amazingly (considering the nature of the article) he hesitates about the matter of man doing good, and says timidly, “ Then it follows — does it not? — that even we may also do good.” It may not seem surprising that scientists have ideas like this, but it is distressing when religious leaders make such comments as, “ . . . should not the Christian welcome with en thusiasm every new advance that mirrors the Biblical vision of a kingdom in which ‘there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor cry ing, [nor] pain’ ?” Men may think they are on their way toward gaining a position which will rival God’s, but God says, “My glory I will not give to another” (Isaiah 42:8).
