Q. How do you get good nursery help ? A. I assume the questioner is re ferring to little ones in the category of 2 years old and under. Some churches have been able to handle this need by use of a system of volunteer mothers who take regular turns of helping in the nursery. Others have found that mothers of little ones need a change of pace when Sunday comes and that hiring outside help is the most effective way. We have tried both systems in our church and now have settled on hiring help, since it has proved a more consistently satisfactory solu tion. Another big advantage of this is having the same personnel in a room week by week. Little ones need the familiar and this does not sub ject them to constant change of per sonnel. The only exception to this is our 2-year old nursery at the Sunday school hour which is a regular de partment of the Sunday school. Rev. Francis Klantz suggests . . . Included in the list of items to collect in a recent scavenger hunt were the signatures of several people who would promise to attend Sun day school and church the next Sun day, or at any particular service. The idea also served as good ad vertising for our church even though it was difficult to secure the names of such people. The following ap proach was used by all when they went to their homes: “We’re young people from the First Church, and are on a scavenger hunt. One thing we need is a signature of someone who will promise to come to our Sun day school or church next Sunday. Will you come?” Believe it or n o t . . . it really worked! Furthermore, it did place our church bulletin in many homes.. A Scavenger Hunt for Young People

Q. Is “ Team Teaching” proving ef fective in church school program ming ? A. Thè term, “ Team Teaching,” has come to carry a variety of meanings in the secular educational programs of the day. The purest form of “ team teaching” is where a group of teach ers share equally in all of the vari ous teaching functions performed with any particular class. It involves much pre-planning. I do not know of many church schools using this approach. There has been quite a trend in Sunday schools, however, to “ Lead Teaching,” where one well- qualified teacher teaches the class as a group and then helper-teachers take over when they are divided into smaller classes and handle the appli cation and whatever activity is en gaged in at tables. The arrangement has i t s advantages, particularly where there is a shortage of quali fied teachers or a problem of ade quate space for individual classes. Q. How may we keep absenteeism down in our Sunday school? A. Here is another problem that is universal, but it is very important when we realize the small amount of time pupils spend in Sunday school. Even if a pupil were to attend every Sunday of a year, 52 hours of Bible study a year is minimal. The best way to control absenteeism is by a teacher’s taking a personal interest in each pupil and offering each Sun day the type of teaching which a pupil will not want to miss. Pupils respond to teachers who show a per sonal interest in them, and there is no substitute for this. However, it is also generally advisable to have some system of consistent follow-up. It is good for teachers to report their con tacts from week to week and to un derstand this as one of their respon sibilities as a teacher.
