A t 12 y e a r s of age, I joined a Boy Scout troop. During the first year, I successfully passed the ten derfoot, second class, and first class tests. One of my ambitions was to go to the Boy Scout camp. There I would easily earn merit badges in swimming, canoeing, camping, and hiking, to become a Star Scout. Trouble was, neither I nor my par ents had the money to pay for such a camping expedition — it would cost $5! I decided I would try to earn $5. Through the winter, I shoveled snow, cleaned out chicken coops, sold maga zines, and de l i ve r ed advertising handbills. I simply was unable to save more than 800. My boyish appe tite tempted me to spend some of my earnings on ice cream cones and malted milk. On the farm that summer one of my jobs was to cultivate corn which had grown about a foot-and-a-half tall. I sat on a cultivator drawn by two horses and guided the hoes through the rows of corn. As I thought about the Boy Scout camp which was only a few weeks away, I stopped the horses and sat for a while, pondering the whole problem. It’s just impossible . . . absolutely impossible, I thought. Suddenly I remembered a Scrip ture verse which I had memorized in the schoolhouse Sunday School near our home, “With God nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:37). I got off the cultivator, walked around in a big circle, and repeated the words out loud: “With God noth ing shall be impossible,” and also an other verse which came to my mind, “ Ask, and it shall be given you” (Luke 11:9). Gradually I decided I should do exactly as the verse said: “ Ask,” for, “he that asketh receiveth.” So, lay ing my straw hat in the freshly hoed ground, I knelt down beside the
