Canteen-As It Happened

Telegraph | Sept. 29, 1942 Father Flanagan … told the ladies in charge that he had heard so much of the fine work that was done here that he could not pass through without making a personal inspection. He spent his time asking many questions regarding the operation and the maintaining of the Canteen. He highly complimented the organization and expressed the hope that they would be able to continue during the duration.

The Canteen’s first autumn yielded still another taste-treat tradition, this one seasonal.

Daily Bulletin | Sept. 29, 1942 NOTICE TO ALL HUNTERS:

The women of the North Platte Canteen wish to announce to all of you hunters that if you would have one or more of the birds of your daily bag cleaned and bring it down to the Canteen, that they would be glad to cook it and prepare it for the boys who go thru. It would probably be the first time that some of the boys from the east ever tasted pheasant or duck. U.S. troops under an up-and-coming general, Dwight D. Eisenhower, would land on the north- west shores of North Africa in November. Every major troop movement required ever greater numbers of trains. Once more, Canteen workers sought and received more donations to keep up with the demand.

Telegraph | Oct. 2, 1942 The North Platte Canteen is in dire need of funds, Mrs. Adam [Helen] Christ, chairman, announced today. In the past month, the expenses for the Canteen exceeded $200 a week. There is an ever-increasing rush of soldiers at the Canteen day after day, with more men being sent to the coasts and more troop trains going through every day and night. The Canteen must have finan- cial aid or close, Mrs. Christ said.

People who wish to sign pledge cards are asked to call at the Canteen for them. Signing of pledge cards is to attempt to stabilize the income of the Canteen so it will have a definite amount of money to use every month. Bill Ackerman [and his band] will sponsor a benefit dance the first Tuesday of every month for the benefit of the Canteen. The dances will begin the coming Tuesday, October sixth, and will be held at the Waltemath hall.
