Canteen-As It Happened

North Platte’s labor unions, from railroaders to musicians, were intent — despite some debate over whether to dance or pray on Dec. 7 — to mark the occasion while benefiting the Canteen (which received $103.25 from their event). The railroaders’ regular New Year’s Eve and May Day balls also became Canteen benefits.

Dear Sir: — In as much as Dec. 7th, 1941, is a red-letter day in American history, next Monday, Dec. 7, 1942, a dance will be given at Jeffers Pavilion to pay tribute to our boys who have given their life in this all-out struggle for freedom and democracy the world over. We feel that the least we can do is to promote a dance, everything being donated, and the proceeds given to our Canteen to aid in their worthy cause of keeping the morale and spirit of those in the armed forces always at its highest. …
