Canteen-As It Happened

A selection by the band closed the broad- cast of the program, which was followed by introduction of representatives from a few of the communities that have been loyal supporters of the Canteen since it was organized. The “Second Broadcast” … was in charge of North Platte’s Mayor, Sidney P. McFarland. … [He] introduced Mrs. S.O. Pitts, Ogallala, who represented the American Legion and auxiliary; Mrs. R.B. Farquhar, Sidney, who also represented the Legion units; William Stierlin, Grant, from the West Valley community club, and Mrs. Louis McNeel, Sutherland. … Gene Slattery, who on some eighty occa- sions had sold his shirt for the benefit of the Canteen, was presented and asked permis- sion to offer his shirt to the highest bidder. The shirt went to William M. Jeffers for a crisp 100-dollar bill.
