Telegraph | June 16, 1944 With the arrival of trains from the east late Thursday, the North Platte Canteen was again on night schedule. A group of workers remained at the Canteen until all available supplies were given out last night, and [they] reluctantly closed the doors at 2:00 o’clock this morning. Telegraph | June 26, 1944 A fine example of what makes the North Platte Canteen the successful and popular place it is was demonstrated by one of the men from Lodgepole working at the Canteen Saturday. The day had been exceptionally heavy, and the supplies had run low two or three times during the afternoon. The man in question had made several trips to the dairy for milk, to the grocery for meat [and] the bakery for bread and had worked on the floor cleaning the tables and helping with the dish- washer, hardly having time to draw a full breath. Later in the evening, a twelve-car hospital train pulled into the station. This man was the first to start out with the baskets that are placed on the cars of the men who cannot get into the Canteen. He carried extra supplies to some cars, and just before the train pulled out, one of the ladies came into the Canteen and said she wanted a sprinter to take a large jar of coffee to the last car on the train as the boys in that car wanted hot coffee badly.
