The Five Tools of Personal Bible Study

Sin

Sin is defined Biblically as lawlessness (1 John 3:4), with the result of people

being dead in their trespasses. The outcome of a sinful heart is a life focused

on the lusts of the flesh and mind, resulting in becoming children of God’s

wrath. Sin is what separates people from God.

Everyone has sinned. It was through the one man, Adam, that sin entered the

world, and through that sin death has spread to all men, because all sinned.

Sin :

… had its o rigin in Genesis 3, r esulting in guilt, shame, fear, blame… and

death!

… s pread to all people in every generation Rom.5:12-19

… involves the lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh, and the pride of life 1 Jn.

2:15-16

… results in death (Soul separation from God. Physical death = Separation of

spirit and soul from the physical body) Ezek.18:4

… continues to occur within a Believer’s life 1 Jn.1:8, 2:1

Salvation

Salvation is the result of believing in the Name of the Son of God. Having

eternal life is the outcome of a believing faith in Jesus, as His death and shed

blood provides the means for our justification and a resulting peace with God.

This eternal life begins immediately upon the point of salvation. Key passages

are Rom.3:20-5:2, Gal.2:16-4:7, and the key concept is “ Righteousness comes

by God’s Grace through our Faith in Jesus”.

Salvation :

… involves s ubstitution (Rom.5:8), Redemption (Gal.3:13-14, 4:4-5), Atonement

(1Jn.2:1-2), Propitiation ( God’s wrath was turned away I Jn.2:2, 4:10),
